Ipad is already a worthless piece of crap. Tablets for the most part are trash.
The reason you say that is because all of the tablets out now are loaded with Android or iOS, mobile operating systems. With Windows tablets you will be able to do anything you'd be able to do on your PC. You'll be singing a different tune once you experience a tablet with a real grown up operating system like Windows 8.
If I buy a tablet, it'll be the Asus Transformer Infinity. iPad 3 has no customization and I prefer the Android OS to iOS. Microsoft has never made a reliable product (Xbox, need I say more) and it's first tablet is going to have a ton of issues. Anyone who buys this is going to regret it.

I'd prefer a tablet with Snow Leopard on it. I prefer laptops though because touch screens just can't replace a keyboard.
I need to play around with a Windows 8 computer because I haven't had a Windows computer for 5 years now. I wonder if it still sucks or if they actually improved the interface.
They may not be for some people, but they clearly have a niche which they fill in well. As for this tablet, we'd have to see how this shit actually functions along with the price point before it can be called an iPad killer. Running regular OS apps sounds good in theory, but will be troublesome for the most part, specially if the apps haven't been optimized properly. You'll be left with a frustrating user experience at the end. The Windows 8 concept is a noble attempt, but it's still seems like a quirky gimmick at the moment. There's a reason why Apple decided not to implement a full OS that allowed full OS X applications to be ran in this type of input environment. We'll see if Windows succeeds in their effort.
Tablets are definitely not useless. For instance, I am using my kindle fire's web browser to post on Insidehoops because my laptop is out of commission.
Back on to topic:
Considering that Microsoft has disappointed me in the last few purchases, I will not be investing in this Microsoft tablet. I like my handy dandy Androit Operating Kindle Fire anyway.
The success of this tablet is going to depend on how Windows 8 succeeds as a desktop OS. Already a ton of reviewers hate it, but Microsoft seems to be banking on people becoming comfortable enough with it that they'll have little reluctance to plop money down on a tablet in lieu of a laptop.
Two big things about this tablet that have me interested are the cover/keyboard and the USB drive. If this turns out to be basically an extremely portable touchscreen laptop, then I'd definitely consider getting one.
However, if their price point is going to be competing with those expensive non-Apple/Amazon tablets that start at around $700, it's not going to make any kind of dent in their sales. The only reason why the Kindle Fire took off was because it was fairly cheap as far as tablets go. Too bad it sucks.
Another thing: there's not going to be an "iPad killer" for a loooooooooong time. "iPad" is pretty much synonymous with "tablet" for most people. Someone who's in the market for this type of thing doesn't want a tablet, they want an iPad.

Not true. The ipad is still fairly new, only 3 years old i think. People who have bought it are early adopters. Right now there are still people in this forum who says that tablets are useless, they obviously have not converted yet. It might eventually become a widely adopted item in the future. And these people will be open to alternative brands.
It's all up to whether apple can continue to innovate without Jobs. Right now their new products do not seem to have anything grand...what's the difference between iphone 4s and 4 again? If this shit keeps up they'll lose their coolness edge.
And I don't think the keyboard affects portability...it doesnt look thicker than the standard ipad cover.

The biggest issue with tablets is people thinking that it's something they need. I have an iPad, and even though my job requires me to use a computer, there's no way in hell I'd be able to get any work done on just an iPad. I'd need a laptop for that, and if this new Windows tablet functions as a makeshift laptop that you can use to do some quick work, I can see it taking off. Like I said, this really depends on how well people respond to the new OS. So far people hate it.
if someone gave me a tablet for free, i'd still be using the laptop that i already am using.
maybe tablets are cool for some, but i definitely don't need it. if i'm out, i can already do everything with the smartphone, and it easily fits into my pocket.
tablets... just seem to be a big inconvenience. and i'm not talking about price. budget is irrelevant. i'd feel the same if it was free. just don't care about it. if i'm heading to the park or the supermarket or the movies, fk no, i ain't bringing a stupid tablet with me. just so inconvenient. but i can still check emails, surf web, do everything online with a little smartphone.
People living in big cities travel on metros and buses, sometimes have a lot of waiting time and also want something portable to look up information, do a search, or show a presentation....most people are like that. Games, videos, the web experience isn't half as fun on a smartphone.
