Teams are limited from offering anything more than the average salary to a restricted free agent with two years or less experience.[9] A player's original team can use the Early Bird exception or their Mid-Level exception to re-sign the player.[4] This is named the "Gilbert Arenas Rule". In 2003, Gilbert Arenas signed a six-year, $60 million contract with the Washington Wizards after his original team, the Golden State Warriors, were unable to match the offer since they were over the salary cap.[10]
Ah right, I didn't know about this rule. Would Bulls fans be happy paying him MLE money if he was offered it?
many Bulls fans think he's just a scrub due to his offense; so I think many won't be happy with that. I think it can still be corrected, but having a condensed season, there's not much coaching you can do at this time.
Personally, If all it took was the MLE, I'd be fine with it. What I'm scared of are the backloaded contract offers that he might get, making it a slippery slope for the Bulls management to match.
I think his defense is going to be important in the playoffs, which many seem to overlook. I think he was a huge part for us in the Pacers, Hawks and first game of the Heat series when Noah was off imo.
Because of the new CBA, there will be more free agents every offseason. Instead of 5 years for FA, you can only sign for maximum 4 years (unless its your FA).
