Default How do you beat the Celtics in Boston?

It's not impossible because it's been done, but how can you do it consistently especially if you have to face the C's in the playoffs?
Here's what I think...

1. Match their intensity level.
Every C's player is more hyped at home, especially Kevin Garnett who takes things to the extreme. You have to go out there with that same energy and the fire in your eyes, you have to want it more than them.

2. Don't let the crowd get to you.
These fans are insane, annoying, and the C's players feed off of them, tune out anyway possible, focus on the task that's at hand. They will cuss at you, boo you as loud as any other hostile basketball arena.

3. Play team ball.
One player is not going to beat this team. Don't look for a good shot, look for a great shot. After the pick and roll or the set screen, be consistent with your jumpshot IF you are left open. The C's defend the pick and roll as well as anybody and force turnovers off of careless passes and deflect the ball pretty well. You have to move the ball around, and try to get to the line as much as possible. If you have a good post player, feed the ball to him and let things happen through him, pick a gameplay and stick with it.

4. Play a little dirty.
Try to get in their heads a little, they have to lose their composure. The most emotional guy on the team is Kevin Garnett, playing mind games with him might not work. Ray Allen and Kendrick Perkins (Leads the league with most T's) could be two players to try to attack. Paul Pierce is the wrong guy to do this to, it lights a fire in his ass and next thing you know he just scored 10 points in a row on you.

I call this the "Celtics Rule", and I really don't any other way to stop them if you are playing agaisnt the C's in the playoffs and they have home court which is probably likely to happen again.

Boston will lose no more than three games at home this season. Book it.

Nice post. I'm with you on #1. However the Jazz fans are far worse, if they have home court advantage in the playoffs, your team is pretty much screwed. I don't think the Boston fans are enough of a nuisance to the opposing teams, its just their players whose intensity steps up a notch when they're playing at home.

my game plan would be to focus on defense, try to force turnovers, and turn them into easy buckets. ideally you'd need a very athletic team [such as atlanta] who can gamble successfully and who can also recover quickly on defense. they'd also be able to get down the floor quickly for easy buckets. the idea is to avoid the half court grind-it-out type of game the celtics like.

Play Stellar Defense, and maintain an incredible shooting percentage on outside shots througout the game.

But this is impossible if the Celtics are on their game.

So really, the only way is to hope and pray that the Celts have an off game.

The only team that has a better then 100-1 shot is Cleveland, Denver (now with chauncey), or Indiana if they have an incredible shooting game from both Granger, Murphy, Ford, etc...

Again, even if a team plays perfect, to beat the C's requires an off game from them.

Play better D than them and dont miss easy shots.

But if the D is bad then beat them the way Toronto did in boston by shooting 57%FG, 61% 3ptFG and 100%FT

Also this season the first game the raps played there they were up by 16 i believe after 3rd and then ended up losing but i believe that was Mitchells fault. So the Celts are beatable even at home.

i dont know about the playoffs

good OP. You basically have to be more physical and dirty than them and come out with incredible intensity. Get garnett in foul trouble and it makes it alot easier.

Beating the Celtics at home is a lot easier than beating MJ with homecourt advantage (because it never happened).
In order to have a chance to beat the Celtics you have to play good defense the entire game and play good team ball. If you have guys that try to take over one on one, then you will get beat. You may be able to try that in a game 7, but not in any other games.

I think you really need to push the ball on the Celtics, try and make it an uptempo game. You also need to rebound on defense well, and hit outlets for fast breaks, and second fast breaks. You need to get easy buckets against the Celtics. If you let them set up their half-court defense all night long.... you're in for a long night.

This is why I think the Hawks play the Celtics well. They have good atheletes, push the ball well on fast breaks and second fast breaks, and they defensive rebound and outlet well.
