That chart is a third grade level analysis - it literally just adds up the main stat categories (pts, rebs, assists) as if they are exactly equal substitutes for each other.. But scoring is the most important thing for a #1 option - hence the definition of "#1" option.

If Lebron was getting 30/18, he wouldn't be helping his team as much as if he was getting 40/10.. The rebounds are replaceable on this particular Cavs team and on most teams.. Whereas the scoring is not - in this series, we've all seen the virtues of high shot volume coupled with a 40 PPG scoring level, and how these things help a team play at their preferred pace.

Even though scoring by itself is already the most important category for a #1 option - the clutch factor must be factored in... Scoring + clutch > than any stat category, especially for a #1 option.

Of course, even using the 3rd grade analysis of adding up pts/rebs/assists like 538 did, MJ still has 3 of the top 10 performances, which is the most top 10's of anyone... and he has 4 total, the most of anyone..

Meanwhile, Lebron only shows up once in the top 10 - he wasn't skilled enough to put up historic numbers while alongside GOOD supporting casts like MJ.. The only way he cracked the top 10 is because his #2 went down with injury in these Finals, forcing him to overcome his beta and shoot indiscriminently.. And he's shown he learned from 2007, when he DIDN'T put up the shots (but still had the same horrific efficiency, proving Lebron can't shoot).

I like how efficiency and possessions used is left out. I guess if a guy takes every shot on every possession for his team, scoring 70 points per game while shooting 35% from the floor he deserves FMVP even if his team loses?

That's not in depth at all. That's kindergarten level analysis. Pretty embarrassing for 538 to resort to such simplistic analysis considering they usually use obscure advanced stats to push their agenda.
