Because he played his worst ball when it counted most and blamed it on others.

His stats in the finals weren't bad at all. He averaged like 25/10/4.

It's easy to look at Malone bulldozing the likes of Bill Hanzlik and think he dominated against weaker opponents, but he had similar success against bigger defenders such as Shawn Kemp, Horace Grant, Buck Williams, Otis Thorpe, Dennis Rodman, Larry Nance, Charles Oakley, etc.

Hanzlik was an All-Defensive Team member once upon a time, although at 6'7" was no match for Karl Malone.

He had that soft touch. Also of the big time power forwards, he claimed the low post better than the rest.

    Well said.

It wasn't really the height on that one, more the weight. Bill Hanzlik was "made" to guard players that did most damage from the perimeter, as he was 6'7'' and really mobile with good defensive fundamentals, and the will. Hanzlik was a really good defensive player, even made the all-defensive 2nd team once... but, although strong for his size, he was just no match for Malone, shit even Jerome Lane (starting PF for Denver there), who was 6'6'', 230 lbs, very strong and athletic, was getting somewhat bullied by Karl.

Those Nuggets managed to be pretty good in some seasons (couple of years before that), as Doug Moe ran a good (very high paced, sort of run-n-gun) offense combined with the ability to defend, as they had the players for that work like T.R. Dunn, Wayne Cooper, Bill Hanzlik, even Fat Lever (who was great all-around), "letting" the best offensive players do their thing... They were sort of like D'Antoni's Suns of the mid-to-late 80's, but with even "faster" offense while having better defense, let's say.
