I hope you don't mind, but I actually used this list - along with 8 others - to create a master list of the top 100 players of all-time. The results are pretty fascinating and very accurate in my opinion: http://basketballjournalist.blogspot...a-history.html
Dirk is too high.

I'll send you an updated top 100. This one is a few years old. This was my 2009 list.
And I agree, the combined results really eliminate the personal biases than inevitably slip into any individual person's list.

GOAT, I may be wrong, but wasn't there a top 10 NBA Teams in NBA History in this project as well?

I did a separate top 25 teams of all-time thread that got me in a lot of troubled and soured me on putting that type of content on message boards. I've been working on a website for the past few months. That'll be the new home for all these pet projects I do.

Thanks, I'd really appreciate it if you sent me your updated 100. I can then update my article at a later date.

Re: The GOAT List: 100 Greatest Players in Basketball History
Such a beautiful thread.
I don't like in general ranking players in the top 10 because i believe a respectable case can be made for multiple players as the GOAT. However, i'm bothered here with one ranking from your list.
George Mikan.
Now, i know he's an all time great who revolutionized the center's position as he defined it as a high scoring position (which Russell would change later), was the first dominant and powerful player etc. His contributions are more than remarkable.
But, i don't think he should be ranked in the top 10 despite his respectable accomplishments. My problem with him is, he never faced a competition worthy to his status.
I'm not going to bash how he faced 6'6 centers and all of that BS, but he did retire one year before Russell arrived plus Baylor and Wilt weren't too far away too.
That's why IMO, he doesn't deserve to be ranked as a candidate for the GOAT honor nor or in the top 10.

D-Wade is 29th on that list and he hasn't even reached 20k yet or won the NBA MVP, yet nobody is saying he's too high.
I think everyone needs to readjust where they "thought" Dirk was ranked, b/c he was always damned good, and now that he bent the entire basketball media critic world over and ****ed them in the ass, it's their turn to shape up and come correct.

I find it surprising that people think Dirk is too high. If you look at his accomplishments, I think he's just right where he is.
Same goes for Wade.
I think there is a tendency amongst fans to err on the side of caution and avoid overrating current players. Personally, I see no harm in ranking them so high... assuming they have the credentials to justify it.

So, if you're starting a franchise, you're going to pick Dirk 6 spots ahead of KG? Good luck with that - hope you're fortunate enough to pick up a good defensive big to put next to him. Just a few months ago, Dirk carried the label of choker. Admittedly, the label was unfair but so is the typical what have you done lately overreaction. Too much is made of clutch, ignoring the whole other half of the game - defense.

Re: The GOAT List: 100 Greatest Players in Basketball History
It definitely is sad to see how people react to things like what Dirk has done this year. Dirk, who is no doubt a great player, played the same way this season and in the playoffs this year as he had the three previous years, and despite that being blatantly obvious to anyone who takes the time to go back and watch, or even just looks stats, people have somehow raised him from a top 40 player to a top 25, or saying he was the best player in the league. It really doesn't piss me off where people rank him, but it does make me angry just because of how dumb people are.

Its because really the only thing holding Dirk back was not having a title. I agree with your post, but its true with everyone. KG jumped up huge when he won even though he wasn't at his best. Kobe jumped up huge proving he could win without Shaq....even though he was a better player in 08 than 09.
Unfortunately that is just how it works. The truth is that guys like KG and Dirk were ranked way too low before they won the title. Now? They seem to be ranked properly.
You speak to the problem with assigning so much value to winning a title as an individual. Dirk absolutely played great in both 09 and 10....yet people hammered him for losing in the playoffs. Dirk arguably played his best series ever against the Nuggets in 09....yet he took the blame. He was overall fantastic against the Spurs last year...yet he took the blame. He was amazing in 06 and really wasn't much better this year....if at all.
He got more help, had a better coach, and got lucky to an extent.
Like you say, the issue isn't where some of the players rank now, its about how idiotic it was to rank Dirk as the 40th best player of all time before this year. That is my issue.
