Beijing (CNN)Legislators in China's far-western Xinjiang province have passed a law to prohibit residents from wearing burqas in public, state media reported, in a continued campaign against what authorities view as religious extremism.
The new ban in Urumqi was approved by local legislators last month, and given the greenlight by the regional legislature at the weekend.
The ordinance name suggests it targets outer garments covering someone's full body including the face, which is called a burqa in some Islamic traditions.
A spate of recent violent incidents has rocked Xinjiang, a resource-rich region long inhabited by the Turkic-speaking, largely Muslim Uyghurs.
The arrival of waves of Han Chinese, the country's predominant ethnic group, over the past decades has fueled ethnic tensions.
Chinese officials have blamed the recent attacks on Uyghur separatists -- whom they also label "religious extremists" -- seeking to establish an independent state.
Last August, another city in Xinjiang banned people wearing Islamic-style clothing and large beards from riding public buses during a provincial sporting event, according to state media.
News reports at the time said Karamay city authorities targeted veils, large beards, as well as three types of Islamic dresses -- including those with the star and crescent symbol. Dozens of bus stations in the city were said to be manned by security personnel to conduct checks and report violators to the police.

While the measures in Karamay didn't openly single out Uyghurs, exiled Uyghur rights groups have condemned them, calling the ban a "green light" for racism and discrimination.
Those restrictions came shortly after after authorities in Xinjiang banned students and civil servants from fasting during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month.

Amnesty International has said Uyghurs face widespread discrimination in employment, housing and educational opportunities, as well as curtailed religious freedom and political marginalization.
Other critics, including exiled Uyghur activists, have attributed the rise of violence in Xinjiang to Beijing's increasingly repressive rule there -- a claim the government vehemently denies.

The reporting on this in MSM is always so racist. Imagine if they said "the arrival of waves of blacks from the deep south has fueled ethnic tensions in Florida."
Radical Islam is the reason for the religious tensions in Xinjiang. Not the migration of Chinese people within China.

Jesus ****ing Christ you're stupid. What the hell does banning Burqas have to do with protecting the country. You think all the fighting is going to stop just because burqas are banned. I used to wonder how people as stupid as you exist, then I realized that America is actually producing retards like you

The burqa is not part of any Chinese tradition. Have you seen the way the Uyghur dress originally? It's colourful and in many ways more open than more common Chinese traditional dress. The burqa is in no way part of the Uyghur's religious background or part of their culture.
The only reason a Chinese person would be wearing a burqa is if they have been radicalised and influenced by foreign extremists. Foreign powers who attempt to destabilize the people of China and try to get the Uyghur people to isolate themselves from mainstream society, foreign powers who try to promote radical and extremist interpretations of Islam in which women are oppressed into wearing a burqa.
So yes. Promoting common values, integration and curbing influence from foreign radical Islamists works wonders towards stopping Islamic violence and Islamic terrorism.

How in the **** can you think forbidding beards and forbidding fasting is gonna help you fight the ''radicals''...the chinese stole these people's land and now they're gonna tell these same people they can't fast in Ramadan? That's a reason to get radical against what sounds like a fascist state.

The Chinese didn't steal their land, they are Chinese themselves.
