If people didn't buy tickets and merchandise in the GM/owners stadium and didn't watch ball on tv(ad $) they wouldn't be writing checks to anyone because there would be no revenue without the customers..

Not exactly. Some are just basketball fans and/or want to own a sports team. Which is why you will see people buy teams not improve it at all and stay in the red.

People do not buy into teams (majority owners) if there is no return involved, plus, this point is a fail on your part becasue you used the term "basketball fan", wouldn't this be an example of a fan that adds to the hype???
