I don't understand the point of this. If you're having sex that cancels this out I would think, no?

Yes and no. You're still releasing your essence while having sex, BUT... having sex with someone is drastically different from porn / masturbation... reason being... you're not completely stuck inside your own head and filling it with toxic imagery. You have another person to consider. It's not all about you.
Believe me when I say that they are drastically different in terms of what it does to your brain.
Sex vs masturbation... ESPECIALLY porn related masturbation... actually ****s with your dopamine receptors. With porn is worse, but it's important to note it's not just porn. Long term self pleasure in place of sex with a partner is bad for multiple reasons.

I've been convinced of its effectiveness in the past. Restraining yourself from tempting release does make you feel good. Your body pulsates with energy and you feel invigorated and confident and capable. It's a type of euphoria. But it doesn't translate into anything worthwhile. It's just rebranding your ego. Peeling back layers of accumulated muck to once again glimpse the essential perfect singular "you". Feels really good.
It's probably inadvisable to chastise no-fap people with lessons on meaning and fulfillment and all the rest. That you are essentially a gap to be filled with with things, activities, knowledge, that make you feel worthy and let others appreciate your worth. They are convinced they are addicts and that their problem lies in their habits, not in their depravities or what's missing in their lives. "Never do it again", one claims, and "I'll go xx without it", another declares. These are popular goals and perhaps irreplaceable starting points for getting better, but they aren't inherently flawed, because they are inherently negative. To try to stop doing something you have always wanted to do is to insist on negating who you are without facing the next step, the harder one, which is declaring who you want to become.
There must be research into the hormonal activities of people no-fap champions who honestly report their progress during the trial. I don't know what it is but my hunch is that it doesn't make the body look good, no matter how good it feels.
And that feeling good does have a real world effect. I just don't think it lasts. In a perverse way, the internal restraint of abstinence releases you from certain moral/social restraints. So maybe you take more risks where you wouldn't otherwise. Maybe you find some success with a mate you'd otherwise cower before or you jump on a job opportunity that seemed impossible before or you just go do something unexpected. And then it pays off, you're thrilled by all this social cache you've earned, and you attribute your new lifestyle to the conservation of your essence or whatever.
I take a more deterministic stance on the whole process though. You wouldn't even be able to make yourself withhold or restrain without the requisite motivation or optimism or botherable assumption. Some like to source their behaviour to their will power, especially on the grounds of abstinence, be it fasting or chastity or solitude. I prefer to source my will power to something else, and that's where I think each individual's enlightenment lies - the discovered source of their own will power. What is your outlet? What is your reason? What is your purpose?
And to answer those questions, you have to go back to really basic self-help goal oriented stuff that seems boring until you apply it. The SMART acronym for instance: goals must be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely.
Another interesting aspect that just occurred to me: your potential levels of success in terms of abstinence is effectively unlimited. I could technically stop doing everything for the rest of my life. Go sit by myself in the woods and starve to death. Total body awareness, total purity, total bliss. But positive goals, like creating wealth or inventing tools or connecting with others: these things are inherently limited by the totality of suffocating context which imposes on every possibility and precedes every decision and drowns you in details.

Life is about moderation kids. Is jacking off all the time not good for you? Probably. Is never jacking off going to dramatically transform your life for the better? Probably not. If you want to jack off, jack off. No fap guys are the equivalent to Alcohol Anonymous members. Now that I think of it, a lot of the guys that swear by it perhaps are crippled by the addiction. If you are one of those guys then maybe forget about it.
