Default Neil deGrasse Tyson Appreciation Thread

I noticed there has not been any appreciation thread on this distinguished gentleman so I felt it was my obligation to introduce you to Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is, as some of you may know, an astrophysicist and simply is a genius and a master at communicating his thoughts & science. He is a cosmologist, an astronomer, & the director of Hayden Planetarium.

He is also the closest thing we have to the late Carl Sagan, who was Tyson's mentor. He is continuing what Sagan started by making Science accessible to the general public. He is rebooting Sagan’s Cosmos series in March of 2014 called Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey. Not only is he all that, but he is somebody inspiring as a person and as a teacher of Science.

He is somebody I look up to. That man is an inspiration to my life – I used to be anxious of things like death, finding peace, and finding relevance when our lives are nothing compared to something as vast as the universe. Thanks to Neil deGrasse Tyson (and Carl Sagan), I’m at peace now over all that.

I present you Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Here's some youtube videos of him that I have watched many times over the years:

    The Most astounding Fact

    We stopped dreaming part 1
    We stopped dreaming part 2

    Fascinatingly Disturbing Thought

    Atheist or Agnostic?

Intelligent Design (or Stupid design as he calls it)

Check out some of his interviews and lectures if you ever get a chance (some of them are pretty long).

    Enjoy!

P.S - I am using this thread to bump up "Carl Sagan Appreciation Thread" by RedBlackAttack because he is who introduced me to Sagan (from Sagan, I found Neil deGrasse Tyson) - http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=147079

There is also a meme of him...the one where he's holding his hands up. I agree though, he is a master of communication.

twitter rant about Gravity (Clooney movie)
I love the guy though, but I had to post that.

This is one of my favorite things he's ever said.

Crap you already posted that in the OP. Let me find something else then.

Here's couple more that will make you chuckle with his presentation, very enthusiastic guy:

This talks about the inaccuracy of eye-witness testimony:
Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson on UFOs

This was on Conan back in 2007 where he promotes his book on death by blackholes:
    Neil deGrasse Tyson on Conan

Tyson opening the Saturn V rocket that was presented to him:
Neil deGrasse Tyson Opens A Rocket In His Office

This guy's enthusiasm makes you want to learn what he has to preach. Just an awesome dude - honestly, his enthusiasm might even exceed Carl Sagan's.

I love Neil but trolling a sci-fi movie for physics mistakes is ludicrous.
What does he say about A Space Odyssey?

I thought this template looked familiar.

It brings me a lot of gratification and satisfaction to know I turned someone onto to Sagan and, by extension, Tyson. I think we even touch on Tyson's contributions at some point in that thread.

I've read some really interesting stories about Sagan and Tyson. When Tyson was applying to colleges for his undergrad work, Carl Sagan personally gave him a tour of the lab and facilities at Cornell. It was all because Tyson had shown an interest in his application in studying the mysteries of the universe.

Obviously, Tyson is a brilliant man and I'm sure that came through during the school recruitment process, but Sagan was that devoted to passing his passion along to the next generation.

He was already very famous by that point and certainly not the kind of guy you'd expect to be giving personal tours for undergrads. But, there was nothing average or normal about Carl Sagan.

He perfected boiling down complex astrophysics so that everyone could understand and appreciate them. That's the torch that he passed to Tyson and Neil carries it well.

So glad you found them and that I could be a small part of the reason why.

That is the best video. It is a damn shame how far NASA has gone down on the priority list.

He is a great spokesman for the STEM world. He really dissects America's atrocious math and science education and he attributes our downfall in competitiveness against other countries to this atrocity.

He is also a great example of a scientist/engineer that can speak and communicate his thoughts coherently. That should be something every scientists/engineer should strive for.
