Funny people are making such a big deal about this libel thing, when that liberal hero Abe Lincoln put prominent politicians in prison just for saying the war had been a failure (before Gettysburg, when this was undeniably true); or even Oliver Wendell Holmes (another liberal hero), who put a bunch of socialists in prison for decades for distributing anti-war pamphlets . They still cite his "fire in a crowded theatre" statement to justify their own abridgements of speech, even though that was used to persecute dissenters.

Where is the consistency?

Abe lincoln and liberal hero? ...Abe was more of a moderate if we think about it. Yes, if he was around today, he would disassociate with Republican party since they have become quite far right but you make it seem as if he would be as liberal as Bill Maher. He would be a moderate democrat.

Apparently, somebody at the New York Times told him that they knew a story they were about to run about him was false but refused to not run it even though they knew it wasn't true.

I agree about Lincoln, but he's often portrayed as something he wasn't. He actually called himself a conservative.

Though i don't think you can plug him in as a 'moderate democrat' either. He was a nationalist, he luurved tariffs, and so on.

Parties have become much more partisan since the days of Lincoln. It is to be expected over time (as many of the founding fathers said it would). Lincoln and even the founding fathers would be ashamed to see Trump/Hillary as most likely candidates. I believe they would have no choice but to side with the left leaning Sanders or libertarian Rand Paul or moderate John Kasich. There is no way most of them would side with Trump/Hillary/Cruz/Rubio/Carson.

The partisan has become ridiculous along with the big money special interests buying the politicians. Possibly worse than ever before.
