Idk, rather just be safe and wear a mouth guard. I can't count how many times I've bit my tongue hoopin. But I guess it's all up to the player. But don't be surprised when Stern comes up with a rule requiring all players to wear them.

I have not seen a padded helmet on an NBA player before. Ice Hockey Helmets don't count
