Is winning the be all end all to a rivalry or do other factors matter too?

By "other factors" I basically mean the clear animosity between the 2 teams or the consistent competitiveness of the games between 2 teams.

Does that matter too because I've seen some "rivalries" where 1 team does most of the winning but people dismiss it and say it isn't because it's in 1 teams' favor win-loss wise, even though the games/series are competitive and/or heated and ratings go up when the 2 teams play.

Rivals need to be of similar age prime-wise too
