However, this is an overnight TV rating. An overnight TV rating measures the top market TV markets in the country, I believe usually the top 50. This involves about 75% of the population. This number is used until a final number involving the whole country can be tabulated.
For instance game 4 measured a 11.8 overnight and a 10.4 final rating.
A 12.4 overnight rating means that among all TV households living in the top 50-75 TV markets in the country (NY, LA, Chi, SF, Dal, Wash, Bos, Phil, Atl, Den, etc.) 12.4% of them were watching the game.
This means we are likely to see a 10.4 or higher final TV rating for the game!
Overnight TV ratings are also important because that is how many large corporations buy add space. Many companies don't care what people are watching in Idaho or Montana, but they want markets like Seattle, Phoenix, Miami, Chicago, New York, and LA. The overnight rating tells them what the TV rating is in the large, heavily populated, affluent, metro areas of the country... so they can plan accordingly.
That is a really good number!
