Cuban expressed concern that referees are ignoring a league emphasis to call defensive three-second violations.

"It's not a tough rule. I don't know what's happened, but it's changed the game," Cuban said. "We've even started to tell our guys, 'Just stand in the paint and don't move,' but some teams have figured it out before us. So it's just wrong."

"We were just missing shots," Cuban said. "This is not relevant to the game today. This is a bigger issue, right? Whether it impacts us or it impacts someone else, here I am saying that we're telling our guys just to camp in the paint, so it's not about this game or any other game. This is just one more example. Something happened.

Cousins stands in the lane indefinitely, maybe stretching his arms out to initiate the within arms reach clause of defensive 3 seconds, every 5 seconds or so.

It's a rule that's interpretation has been laxed. Essentially teams have tested officials into calling it, like they do with any other rule. refs make compromises and interpretations and importance changes in the sake of displaying an entertaining product. George Karl back in the 90's with the Supersonics, was at the forefront of testing the officials and the illegal defense rules. He was commonly known to get away with zone type defense. It's the same thing when Pat Riley's knicks, after seeing Detroit bully his Lakers, tested the refs on fouling and physical defense. This had ramifications that made a statement as the lockdown defense physical era of the late 90's and early 2000's

Unfortunately, Pau isn't allowed to wait under the rim, since that's 8 feet away from Duncan, and out of "armslength".






Here's another example - Maurice Speights must follow Tristan Thompson to the block to stay within "armslength", which prevents him from contesting Lebron at the rim - you can see how wide the paint is on this angle (16 feet wide).






But in previous eras, defenders were allowed to stand under the rim while their man was on the block because paint-camping was legal.. With defenders camping under the rim, Kawhi would NOT have gotten a wide open dunk in previous eras:

Exactly which is why it's so laughable to see people get all excited about anyone in current era putting up numbers close to Jordan. Essentially Jordan had to deal with a more clogged paint and he STILL dominated. If those same rules were in effect today, players like Curry and Lebron would struggle. This just shows how much more advanced and better a player MJ was. In today's game, he would dominate and putting him in place of Bron in all 6 of bron's finals would result in 6/6.

Anyways, back to the topic. Yes, refs have relaxed the rule but defenders still have to be at arms length.
