Wouldn't really good teams also influence the numbers then? So the bad teams negate the good teams.
Actually what Bob is saying makes a lot of sense.
Crappy teams have don't have the same turnout at their home games. Ergo, the discrepancy between a good teams w-l records at home and on the road is a better gauge.

probably a combination of several things, some mentioned above
I'll add travel is also easier now, chartered planes, nicer accommodations, better facilities away from home, better training techniques/staff... visiting teams don't have it as rough as they used to...
