Quote:
That leaves just Derrick Favors and Dante Exum to play with, and my sense is that the Jazz would only part ways with those two if something came up that was too good to pass up. Then there’s Tony Bradley and three non-guaranteed players whose salary doesn’t count in trades until they’re past their guarantee date. Georges Niang and Royce O’Neale are no-brainers to keep anyway, because they’re both steals whose salaries are only $700K or so more than a minimum roster hold. Neto ($2.15M, non-guaranteed until 7/9) is a bit more costly and therefore could be included in a deal — or waived from his salary and signed back later at the minimum.

Exum and Favors need to go. Neto might as well too if no one will appreciate him anyway. I'd want to keep the others ideally but all should be considered for the right pieces

Quote:
The catch: None of those scenarios opens up a max slot, even for the lowest category of max player. Trading Bradley into space would get them really close to the 0-6 year max, but would also likely cost them an asset.

I doubt it. Bradley is young and skilled. Should be able to trade him for a 2nd round pick

Quote:
Players they could theoretically target: The high teens to mid 20s range is where you can probably land a Bojan Bogdanovic or Harrison Barnes type. And somebody like Julius Randle or Nikola Mirotic should come cheaper than those two. They could also keep Favors and just trade Exum into space, which would open them up to essentially join the MLE market (they’d essentially have $8M and change) for guys like Al-Farouq Aminu or DeMarre Carroll.

Randle!

Quote:
Pros/Cons: This does give Utah the opportunity to add a starting caliber shooting forward. But without being able to get to the max range, you’re talking about guys who aren’t necessarily even an upgrade from Favors in a vacuum. Utah’s main objective after agreeing on Conley should be to add depth back, and sending Favors and Exum out in a deal for what essentially could amount to a lateral move take their depth in the opposite direction.

Guys that fit vs guys that don't is not lateral. No brainer

Quote:
They can trade Favors + Exum together and bring back just over $34M — a max slot for a 0-9 year veteran!

sweet!

Quote:
Players they could theoretically target: It’s hard to know which guys under contract are actually available. Gallinari costs $22.6M, but I have insisted all summer long that he’s not a fit. Kevin Love costs $29M, but he’s aging, coming off 60 missed games, and is owed $120M total over the next four. Then there are guys like Gorgui Dieng and James Johnson who probably aren’t worth it as they wouldn’t replace Favors’ production and impact.

Johnson a better fit and could probably be had for just Exum?

Quote:
The Jazz would have to rescind their free agents (they’re rescinding them anyway) and also waive Favors and Neto to create a $32.7M salary slot, which is the max for 0-9 year vets. After they sign a guy, then they just need to find a team that wants to get in on the Memphis trade and take Exum for free. Exum’s inclusion would allow Utah to complete the Conley trade as an over-the-cap deal, without altering the pieces they’ve already negotiated as going to Memphis.

That sounds most doable. Too bad they love the bust so much

Quote:
Option 5: Make the Conley deal, keep Favors and Exum, improve the roster around the edges

Favors needs to go. There is some hope that Exum can play like he did fr those few games before he sprained ankle. Is there hope he will ever stay healthy though?

Quote:
The specifics: The punditry already views the Jazz as a title contender after landing Conley, so do they even need to take the risk of pushing for another acquisition at the expense of rotation-caliber talent? Utah could decide that having quality in players in rotation spots six through nine is more important than a nominal upgrade (or, frankly, a lateral move) on their fourth best player. Like, is Barnes better than Favors to the degree that it makes sense to decimate the bench? Is he better at all? That’s debatable.

what isn't debatable is who fits better and it's not Favors

Quote:
Now, would they do it for Harris, for Middleton, or other guys in that tier? Maybe, yeah. But barring one of those guys being available, I think Utah will ride into October with Favors and Exum complementing their new core, and in the meantime use smaller exceptions to target good-fit, affordable rotation guys.

sounds like Middleton could be available and Harris wants to play here possibly

Quote:
Pros/Cons: The reality is that Favors is a very good player; it’s probably fair to call him Utah’s third best player from 2018-191 and he’s better than most players the Jazz could realistically bring in through the cap gymnastics described in options 1 through 4. Sure, more stars always sounds like a fun idea, but Gobert-Mitchell-Conley is a title-worthy core with the right complementary pieces in place and with continued growth from Mitchell. Unless the perfect target is there for the taking, there’s a real argument to be made for not overthinking this.

Favors doesn't fit though!

What Allen showed that was surprising was a legit ability to pass the ball and create for teammates. Allen is a better passer than you think and, if he can improve, could become a legitimate backup point guard in the league. Considering his decent size and athleticism that would be a great outcome for the Grizzlies to find a rotation guy in their trade with Utah.

seriously? We talking about the same guy that either shot or turned it over every time he touched it? Wasn't much different with the Stars either. I saw 6th man if anything

Quote:
The other thing that Allen does better than expected is rebound the ball. Allen had a knack for the ball and there were a few games where he would fight for boards and get them.

With the Stars he hit 3's and scored and not much else which was disappointing for a 1st rounder that was 23

Quote:
I assume if an unforeseen free agent signing or sign-and-trade opportunity emerges that’s just too good to pass up, we could see it happen, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Favors will very likely be more talented and fit Utah better than just about anyone they could add at his salary level this summer.

the fact that he doesn't fit makes that laughable

Quote:
But at $4.8 million, we’re not talking very sexy targets. Think more along the lines of players pointed out in an excellent piece by Salt City Hoops’ Dan Clayton, such as Dewayne Dedmon or DeMarre Carroll (should their market value slip pretty significantly), or the likes of Mike Muscala, Dante Cunningham or Mike Scott. Personally, I’d love a reunion with the Junkyard Dog, who may be one of the few actually willing to take a discount to play in Utah considering that he loved it here before.

I'd welcome Demarre back too!

Quote:
Another one that could end up making a ton of sense is if the Jazz simply retain Thabo Sefolosha in spite of his free agent status. He already has chemistry and a connection with the team, and while he’s not flashy, he’s certainly serviceable.

the coach isn't a fan so why?

Quote:
But beyond Utah’s starters, who you could argue may already be good enough as they are barring an unforeseen regression (though of course improvement is always desired and important), most importantly of all the Jazz will need their role players to up their game to another level. This perhaps applies to no one player more than to Dante Exum, whose career has been decimated by a constant fight with injuries thus far.

and an even bigger fight with putting the ball in the basket and holding on to it

Quote:
Royce O’Neale made massive strides last year, and as he continues to get better as a 3-and-D threat, he could very well be a Sixth Man of the Year Candidate. The Jazz will need that in order to truly contend. Some meaningful improvement from Tony Bradley, though not mission critical, would certainly be helpful as well.

If Bradley is 3rd string who cares?

Quote:
Relating this to the Jazz, by adding Conley, they’ve likewise given themselves a chance. However, as things continue to play out this upcoming season, they’ve got to do all it takes to continue to capitalize on a championship window if it appears that it’s truly there. I just finished talking about how important it is for Exum to improve. But if he doesn’t seem to be getting where the Jazz need him to be, then they have to be open to dealing him at the trade deadline.

need to be open now because they need a new starting 4

Quote:
The same – as much as it pains me to say it – applies to Derrick Favors who the Jazz have miraculously been able to still hold onto. Ideally, he will thrive with Conley in the mix and continue to be a stud for the Jazz. But if he’s not quite taking the Jazz to the appropriate level, his expiring contract could be an incredible asset this February.

miracuously holding on to a player that needed to go years ago!

They better. Need a starting 4 that isn't Favors minimum. Ideally Favors and Exum gone
