Re: Tommy Heinsohn on why big men aren't dominating the NBA
Pretty true. It's supply and demand.
3p shots are the rage right now, which means that the defenses will adjust. And when they do? Big men will start to punish them in the paint. Rinse and repeat.

Re: Tommy Heinsohn on why big men aren't dominating the NBA
3pnt shooting is a bi-product of the real offensive goal, which is to penetrate the defense from the perimeter, preferably from the the top of the key area.
Until the rules change, NBA coaches will continue to focus on perimeter penetration as their primary source of offense, with 3pnt shooting being the primary bi-product of this strategy.

I think he's right, could you imagine a back to the basket center like Wilt, or Shaq on the Warriors? They'd have all the space in the freaking world, and be in the perfect position to see/pass it out to the perimeter
"A Great Big Man catches the ball and waits a split second to survey the court, to see how the individual and team defense will react to the low post pass. One thing I teach Big Men is after receiving the pass, to throw a fake pass out to the teammate who just passed you the ball. This usually prevents any sagging guards from reaching in and taking your precious rock, also giving you that split second you need to survey and then attack. This split-second rule let

Re: Tommy Heinsohn on why big men aren't dominating the NBA
he said anybody with a whit of sense could see big men are going to come back with the emphasis on 3s. and he's right. with teams fielding a small roster, a team with a good big man is primed to punish small ball teams.
he said all it needs is a big man with a floater and a hook shot.
again, San Antonio is leading the league in exploiting the small ball trend.
they've increased their mid range shots (courtesy of Kawhi and Aldridge) and they've focused on defending the three ball (best in the league right now at defending the 3)
too bad Timmy is not in his prime anymore. he would punish teams that try to go small on them.
it was also a gem when Heinsohn said this:
95% of nba coaches WERE PGs themselves, so they wouldn't have any idea how to utilize big men, or even how to teach them how to play like big men.

The 3 point shot prolongs the careers of players.
If you observe, I would bet most "slashing" players shoot more 3's as they get older.
Paul Pierce used to be a guy that got to the free throw line 12 times a game. The last 4 years he's been a 3 point guy.
If we take big men like KG, his ability to hit the long range 2's has made it so he doesn't bang in the post as much.
I've hated coaches telling young players like Cousins, Davis to shoot 3's. Their skill set is to be a terror on defense and great in the post.
The one team I like the most constructed is Jason Kidd's Bucks.

How? A smaller team like the Warriors could just force the opposing big man to come out and guard perimeter players and clear out the paint.
The 3 pt shot is the new way to dominate a game.
