Grew up 15 minutes east of Providence and lived in the city for four years for college. Good place to live.

Yikes. I don't think I have ever heard somebody say that last one.

I have a conditional job offer that I pan to accept if it becomes an official job offer. I am so happy to get away from Arizona. I also love cities, so I'm excited to have super easy access to Providence and be only an hour from Boston (should be much easier to attend Celtics games than the 2+ hours I currently have to Suns games). I'm not too familiar with the east coast, but I am excited either way.
    DO IT!

Rhode Island is so beautiful. There is so much to see and do outside. You're always within a stone's throw of someplace memorable.

I long for New England all the time. Hopefully I'll be back there within 5 years.

Certainly get the hell out of Arizona. If you're going to be in the Southwest, at least be somewhere interesting (New Mexico)

If there is one place in America that still has traces of racism, it's certainly New England. This is where Henry Louis Gates Jr. was arrested for "breaking in" to his own home.

In the South most "racism" is really something else. People who aren't dressed respectably are viewed with more distrust here. White or black. If you're in a suit or a turtleneck, nobody's going to call the cops on you here.

Being a straight white male this isn't high on my radar, but the south really is much more racially comfortable, on the whole, than the north. (In the midatlantic region, race barely even exists for people, in my experience.)

I disagree with that. I'm not white and I remember being stared at down in the Carolinas at a gas station. I don't run into that at all where I grew up. I find NE/Rhode Island fine for race. Boston is an extremely diverse city. Ton of Asians, whites, and I believe most of south Boston is Black. I've heard down south, cities are even more segregated by race and class.

If you ever get a chance to get up to Boston for a night, it's a good time. Catch a Celtics or even a Bruins game.

Can't speak for the Carolinas. (I think Kblaze resides there though.)

Cities are always different. I live in Louisville which is pretty diverse. But if you look at the rest of KY on an electoral map it's all red, only Jefferson County where Louisville is is blue. Cities are 80% immune to geography. I'm thinking of ordinary residential neighborhoods and whatnot.

Of course all I have is my experience to go on, and some testimony. The experience of many could be different and I could be wrong.

But Boston is not a good predictor of what Rhode Island will be like, or someplace else in Massachusetts. And I have heard plenty about Boston from those who have a different experience.

Providence is a great city. An old fashioned mob town, which means it's got great food. It's one of the rare cities that gives you the metropolitan feel without being overwhelmed.

It also has a weird semi legal prostitution policy, which lends itself to a nice seedier side of town.

Me you and J$ can meet up at the Indian casinos.

I plan on going to Celtics games a few times a year. Heck, if I could make 4 2-hour trips to Phoenix games this year in the f*cking heat, I could make 1-hour trips to Celtics games. I'm sure I'll spend some time downtown and catching concerts and other events as well. My gf is a Patriots fan, so we'll likely go to at least 1 game a year for that.

Hell, I'll also make it to New York for Knicks/Nets games, and potentially Phil and Washington games.

Federal Hill is the place to eat and no mistake.

Andino's, Mediterraneo and Cassarino's are first-class Italian joints. Sicilia's Stuffed Pizzas are great and I have always maintained that Caserta Pizzeria makes the 2nd best pizza I've ever had (Frank Pepe's in New Haven, CT being #1). Top it off with coffee and cannoli at Dolce Vita. The mob has even let first-class Mexican and Japanese places on Atwells now.

This. They've got an awesome bar right on the beach. $3 Bud Lights if you feel like getting your redneck on.
