because it's apparently french and pronouncing it "farve" is still closer to being correct than pronouncing it as "favor" or whatever the typical american would pronounce it as.

There's just certain words, mostly names, that are spelled all crazy-like. I know there's a lot of places in England, such as Worcester, where the spelling is waaaaaay off, there's extra letters in the name and stuff.

Favre has some French ancestry. I know that a lot of words in French end in a silent -re, which merely modify the letters before it. Perhaps his name was French, pronounced like "Fahv", which could have evolved into Farrrv as people over-pronounced it and/or got confused by the R.
