I'd certainly recommend it. Like Rufus said, the Larry David stuff is awesome, some really funny little prank stories and anecdotes, interesting takes on race and supreme talents who didn't fit, and reading about the generational shifts was really interesting.

I'm really into the behind the scenes type of interviews so I loved it and it got me to rewatch a lot of really great sketches and discover some which was its own reward.

stopped a couple of times because i dont care for certain characters. And i heard that a particular character i dont like will be very important in future books so i'm a little unsure if i should finish(Paran.) If i end up stopping again i'll look for some scifi to read instead

Natural Born Heroes.

I wouldn't say it's a must read. Some interesting anecdotes but the writing is a bit sporadic.

One of my favorite books. Loved every page.

Second time reading it.

Quote:
Marlantes is a graduate of Yale University and a Rhodes Scholar. He was also a highly decorated Marine who served in Vietnam. He was awarded the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation Medals for valor, two Purple Hearts, and ten Air Medals. He spent 30 years working on the novel, which was rejected for publication numerous times.[3]

The book is set in Vietnam in 1969 and draws from the experiences of Marlantes, who commanded a Marine rifle platoon. The novel presents an unflinching look at the hardships endured by the Marines who waged the war on behalf of America.[4] It concerns the exploits of second lieutenant Waino Mellas, a recent college graduate, and his compatriots in Bravo Company, most of whom are teenagers. "Matterhorn" is the code name for a fire-support base located between Laos and the DMZ. At the beginning of the novel, the Marines build the base, but later they are ordered to abandon it. The latter portions of the novel detail the struggles of Bravo Company to retake the base, which fell into enemy hands after it was abandoned.

It's awkward when people thank me for my service, because I read books like Matterhorn and there is a noticeable difference between what I saw and what they saw.

While combat is scary no matter where it is, it's one thing to be sitting in an armored truck blasting away at cave people... its another thing to be walking through the jungle and being ambushed by a trained and organized enemy.

I saw the Friends of Eddie Coyle movie. It was good, but not great. I liked Peter Boyle in the movie. I like movies from the early 70's, they are not politically correct whatsoever and have a gritty look to them.

It reads like a script. It feels like it's something that could be re-done right now as a period piece to great effect. Or it could be updated to a current era crime genre, but you'd have to figure a way around the cell phone issue.

I love the crime genre of both book and film, but they're harder to find now for whatever reason. I know they don't sell super well, but they're not usually all that expensive to make. I know Lehane's stuff is bought on spec at this point.

Matterhorn sounds really interesting, I have to check that out.

I'm reading "Over the Top" by Arthur Guy Empey. It's not a long book, but it's quite good. I got goosebumps in chapter 11. World War 1 isn't spoken of much. Empey was an American that enlisted with the British Army during WW1. The trench warfare and other things he went through are intriguing. Nearly a whole generation (young men) was wiped out in Europe in this war.

Obviously it's not a novel but thought I'd share the most recent cookbook I bought. Can't wait for bulking season

Just skim-reading a little bit of "The Book of Basketball" again, only briefly: http://amzn.to/2aHKZBQ
