I've always wondered about this. Shaq was the most dominant player of his era. He has 4 rings and 3 finals MVPs if i'm not mistaken. So what is the logic behind him only having won one NBA MVP award throughout his entire career, while they are now awarding the MVP to LeBron James every year it seems? Both were the most dominant players in their eras. What exactly is LeBron doing that Shaq did not do during his time?

Seriously? Shaq was the most dominant player in his era and he backed it up with titles. LeBron is doing the same thing in his own era. One is winning MVPs every year while the other didn't. What is the difference?

Shaq came into camp overweight, out of shape or recovering from surgery he put off all summer until the last moment. Those Lakers teams led by Kobe carried him more times than naught until he was up to speed. Hard to give the award to a guy like that no matter how good he is when you have other players in the league giving it their all from the start on teams that would collapse without them.

He usually had a top 5 player next to him during his most dominant runs
In 01 he didn't get it because he played with Kobe, and AI was leading a #1 team w/o another elite player.
The criteria changes ever year, it's crazy. How many MVPS would Tim Duncan have every time he put up 20 & 10 and led a team to 50 + wins like when the Award was given to Nash 2 years in a row while putting up equivalent numbers for a point guard. Steve Nash has more MVPS than Shaq..doesn't seem right

00 he won and had one of the most dominant MVP seasons ever
01 A.I. had the underdog factor on his side
02 Shaq came in out of shape and Duncan had a very dominant season.
actually I always believed Shaq should have won the MVP in 05

that's why the mvp doesn't mean crap. It's a media voted player award.. goes to the best story that season. It holds no merit. At all.

they are not entirely about the player and more about how your team is performing in the Regular season. Hence why lebron has gotten 4 but has failed in 2 of those 4 years in the postseason.
the mvp award as fell hard, believe or not. if your a lebron stan mineswell avoid this thread
