Always been a gimmick. Hate them too. Sometimes it keeps me from getting a pair of ball shoes I actually want: Kobe 2 Orcas, Soldier VI, and now the KD 7. The strap literally does nothing. They should be removable. I'd cut them off if I wasn't left with a messy, sticky Velcro attachment.
