Yes they probably had the worse USA GAME ever getting blown out by PR but that was the 1st game of the tournament. They then recovered and beat a game Greece team (basically the same team that beat USA in 2006 and won silver) and then most importantly won the quarterfinal game against a 5-0 Spanish Team (yes basically the same Spanish team the won the WC 2 years later) and then won the Bronze medal game against a good Lithuanian Team that already had beaten them in pool play. Probably all three of those team were better then the current French Team.

To compare them to this team that lost 2 games in a row and then only recovered to beat Poland is nuts.

France took the bronze. They were one of the best teams in the tournament and certainly comparable to anyone they played 15 years ago when teams weren't as good internationally. If the USA doesn't match up with them they might have still won gold. Serbia was supposed to be the team to beat and I certainly don't really even count that one anyway. Playing for 5th? They'd already qualified for the olympics. Pretty meaningless. 2004 was just a bunch of individuals put together when the USA thought they would automatically win. This was an actual team that was put together to play as a team. Guys like AI and Marbury wouldn't even be considered for team USA today and Brown was certainly a bad choice as coach for that team
