Do you guys still think shading is the shit?
.
Clippers destroyed shading and floating bigs repeatedly in clutch of Game 4 - very standard in today's game.. ANY perimeter ballhandler - even Austin Rivers - should be expected to blow by bigs on the perimeter.
AERIAL VIEW of perimeter ballhandlers toying with shading (A. Rivers = superstar).. Of course, with bigs getting beat on the perimeter, there's no resistance at the rim - the ballhandler gets an in-stride layup with the big flailing from behind:
In today's game, with paint-camping banned, bigs are forced to come out of the paint to flood and shade in the ballhandler's wheelhouse: the perimeter.
Shading was still used in previous eras on screen roll as well, but there was no spacing, so bigs still had help after getting beat on the perimeter - it wasn't an open lane like today.. But more importantly, in non-screen-roll situations, the option was there NOT to shade and just camp under the rim instead - this was the most-used and preferable option.. Today's defenders don't have this more optimal option.
Defending guards on the perimeter is a massive disadvantage for bigs, but today's spacing and paint-camping ban necessitate it.. Otoh, in previous eras, there was no spacing and paint-camping was legal, so bigs didn't need to come out of the paint to shade on the perimeter - they could just wait right under the rim "with no time restriction", as stiplulated in Rule 2b of the Illegal Defense Guidelines.

if bigs were camping in the paint the ballhandler would have a wide open free throw line jumper.. which should be a pretty automatic shot for guards.

stfu 3ball
For the record that's not shading. That's switching because the primary defender was screened off.

for the record - every single one is shading - the big man is playing way off his man to anticipate and defend the impending ballhandler penetration.
all gifs show the big man outside of the paint guarding a perimeter ballhandler 1-on-1..
that's what shading does - it brings the big man out of the paint to defend a ballhandler on the perimeter, like every one of those GIFS..
it's the same as previous eras, only previous eras had no spacing, so the big still had defenders in close proximity to help after they got beat on the perimeter... the GIFs show it all plain as day..

bigs didn't need to shade as much in previous eras because teams didn't run nearly as many ballhandler-friendly screen rolls.
nor did they start the screen rolls nearly as far out on the floor.

today's spacing and defensive 3 seconds opens up the middle of the floor, making for a much more screen-roll friendly environment and therefore an easier environment for all ballhandlers.

yeah that's pretty damn obvious. why do you feel the need to make a bunch of threads about it?

it might be obvious to you, but not so much for a lot of other fans.
but previous eras simply didn't have the wider lanes provided by spacing, so you didn't see as much of the easy shit (porous shading) that i posted in the OP, that even austin rivers can murder.
today's spacing simply provides a much friendlier screen-roll environment.. the hand-check ban and hands-off approach to defense only further facilitates an easier environment for perimeter ballhandlers (which of course, includes all wings - in case you thought it only helped PG's... it helps ANY perimeter player that handles the ball).

When you have no handchecking, no paint camping, and set screens every play even Austin Rivers can appear to be a strong slasher.

Some pathetic defense by Duncan.
lol @ clowns on here talking about how he "anchors" that defense.

With all that paint packing defense, they must have shot a lot of 3's back in the 90's.

I still have no idea why 3ball talks about spacing like it hurts the game.
