Beat me to it.
And seriously, he always had peers pushing him for it, he was always near the top of the league, but he had a real time breaking through. His attitude and problems with his team and team mates probably hurt him a lot when it came to voting too.
He could have won 1 or 2 more, but he also could have none. He will most likely be remembered as a scorer, not an all around player.

A lot of things are just timing and luck. Do I think that Kawhi deserves 2 DPOYs and Duncan none? No, but it is what it is.

Exactly. Great scorer, great longevity, great work ethic. His peak was incredible too, but generally never allowed him to distance himself from his peers at the top of the league in many (if any) single seasons.

It's tough because I think Duncan (and LeBron both) could/should have won one, but yet I can't point to a single season where either one was definitively robbed of being DPOY. It's surprising that he never got one with how big man-friendly the award has been historically, but when you play through the careers of guys like Big Ben and Mutombo I guess that happens.
The fact that Timmy was fringe DPOY level as a two-way god for so long is incredible in its own right, as the guys he was losing to every year usually were defensive specialists.

Because its a best player on the best regular season team award.
Kobe doesnt care about the regular and didnt play on stacked teams that racked up tons of meaningless regular season wins.

Trust the process.

What? Kobe definitely was on stacked team he just individually wasn't good enough to win it.
And all of Kobe's greatest moments are from the regular season, it's pretty obvious he cares

Same with Shaq right?
Steve Nash passed the multiple MVP award mantle to Lebron who passed it to Curry.
Great regular season players on stacked teams.

Re: How come Kobe only won 1 MVP?
because kobes career started right after the shooting guard era ended and the big man era began. then when that ended the point guard era started. look at 2 of the best shooting guards in the last 15 years, d wade and kobe. both have 8 championships together, thats more than 50%, but between both of them, only 1 MVP. its all about timing in public perception. its not kobes fault he had to follow up the jordan era. its not a coincidence nash, rose, curry all won mvps in the point guard era.

Probably even if it isn't true. See KD is a one dimensional player, and while near Kobe's level as a scorer or roughly equal ... Isn't close to the all around player Kobe was.
While he wasn't near the peak levels of a defender on a consistent basis as say Jordan, whom he most emulated, he was a very good defender for a number of seasons.
He'll always go down in history as kid brother. Cover band MJ. Jordan Lite.
He was as dimensional as Jordan, just not to the same consistent level in all categories. Including scoring, which is his best attribute. And for my money, the best ISO one on one player since Mike. And probably the only one who can rival him in that regard.
Taking away their two worst statistical seasons, Kobe as a teenager off the bench in '97 and '98. And Yoda MJ on the Wizards as a 39 and 40 year old ... You're looking at:
28 ppg 5 apg 5 rpg w/ very good defense
vs
32 ppg 6 apg 6 rpg w/ all time great defense
The difference is both small, yet substantial at the same time if you watched both in context.
But honestly from 2001 - 2010, Kobe's prime years, either all time great teammate dominance or high individual level of competition through out the league among superstars kept more of that MVP awards out of his hands.
For my money he was easily the best in the game from 2006 to 2008. With arguments in 2003, 2009, and 2010. He should've had 2x to 3x MVPs in that span from 06 to 08.
But he was battling a bad rep following the rape case and destruction of the championship Lakers, viewed as selfish and agenda drive , while coinciding with the rise of the golden boy selfless leader in Steve Nash.
Sucks for Kobe, but his resume got a boost from rings with Shaq early in his career. So in the overall scheme of things, it's fair I guess.

Shaq had the 3rd highest PER in nba history. He rested during the season and dominated in the finals.
In the finals, your hero is a 41% shooter and and a 25% game 7 scorer. He's a perennial choker.
Don't insult Shaq or any top 10 player by comparing a scrub to them
