Read John Gardners Grendel This Weekend. I remember reading it freshman year for a class and I really liked it. I only picked up some of the surface themes and implications. I even missed Beowulfs first words to Grendel before ripping off his arms.
After reading it again .....wow..... Very well written I like some of the ideas although I'm not fakkit nihlist.
"As you see it it is, while the seeing lasts, dark nightmare-history, time-as-coffin; but where the water was rigid there will be fish, and men will survive on their flesh till spring. It’s coming, my brother. . . . Though you murder the world, turn stones into plains, transmogrify life into I and it, strong searching roots will crack your cave and rain will cleanse it: The world will burn green, sperm build again....That...My promise" - Beowulf
. ....... pretty much mind fks Grendel and slightly mind fks the scent[philospy] which the Dragon passed on to Grendel.
Slow so far but most of his novels are usually like this. Hopefully I like it as much as i like his other stuff.
SRS though I have to read more Gardner.
