Is it time to tear this team down?

Trade Bautista, EE, Lind, Buerhle and Dickey for young players and prospects?

Move forward with a rotation of Stroman, Sanchez, Hutch, Norris and Jenkins.
Build a new young offensive core in acquired pieces to grow with the young rotation?

Personally I would like to see them add a few pieces in the off-season and give it one more go. If we aren't playing really good baseball at the all-star break I think it is time to cash in on our aging veterans while we still can.

idk about a tear down, but they need to do something big this winter.

the last 2 seasons have been a fukcing flop.

The Blue Jays have 26 games left to play this season. They are 10 games back of first in the American League East and five games back of the second wild-card spot, with four teams ahead of them. They will likely need to win four-fifths of their remaining games to have any shot at the post-season. The odds are long — 1.4 % to be exact, according to Baseball Prospectus’s complex projection system.

Mark Buerhle's contract needs to go.

19 million for a #4 is really holding this team back since Rogers has shut the tap off.

....Toronto's 3% chance of making the playoffs projects them to finish the season 82-80. Hard to believe that a month ago they were in a wild-card spot and still in the hunt for the AL East crown.

While it's not much the schedule does offer the slightest bit of optimism. The Jays' first 12 games in September are all against teams currently below .500.

* Sept. 2-4
@ TB (67-70)

* Sept. 5-7
@ BOS (60-77)

* Sept. 8-10
vs. CHI (62-76)

* Sept. 12-14
vs. TB (67-70)

Even without David Price, Tampa Bay's starting pitching is still good (3.45 FIP in August), but they've disappointed defensively (-30 Defensive Runs Saved this season) and taken a step back at the plate (3.9 runs per game).

Boston and Chicago have struggled all season.

If the Blue Jays are going to make any run at all, we'll know sooner rather than later. After their soft start to September they close out the season with 14 straight games against teams above .500, including six against the Orioles.

* Sept. 15-17
vs. BAL (79-57)

* Sept. 18-21
vs. NYY (70-65)

* Sept. 22-25
vs. Mariners (73-63)

* Sept. 26-28
vs. Orioles (79-57)

...All Toronto can do now is take care of business early so that maybe there's some sizzle left for the second half of September. Otherwise there's a long list of people that will feel the heat in the offseason.

Four players -- Melky Cabrera, Colby Rasmus, Casey Janssen, and J.A. Happ -- are headed to free agency at season's end. Decisions have to be made that will shape how Anthopoulos and the front office will approach the offseason.

"We've got, obviously, two-thirds of our outfielders slated to be free agents. Two-thirds of the outfield is significant, one way or the other that would be the priority ... [Cabrera]'s been great. He's had a great year and I think he enjoys being here and I think he wants to be back here."

For the third time in four years, 2013 being the exception when he was clearly not healthy, Cabrera has been a force at the plate. putting up a .304/.354/.464 slash line. His 127 wRC+ puts him among the league's top-20 offensive outfielders. It's going to cost them, likely 4-5 years at $12-15M per season but if the Blue Jays are serious about contending, they simply cannot let a legitimate top of the order bat get away.

The silence about Rasmus and the ambiguous nature of Anthopoulos' response confirms what was becoming quite clear from the outside. Rasmus is not part of the team's plans going forward. Anthony Gose, Kevin Pillar and Dalton Pompey, who made his major league debut Tuesday night, will receive playing time in September at his expense.

...Upgrading either infield spot has been a focus for the front office going all the way back to last year. It would create some stability for Lawrie, who's been yanked between second and third while battling to stay healthy.
Quote:
...This has been Janssen's worst season after three years as Toronto's most reliable reliever, two of those years as their primary closer. His K rate this season (14.7%) is more than 10% worse than it was from 2011-2013 (25.1%). That's a worrying sign for a pitcher like Janssen that relies so much on fastball command to make up for a lack of velocity. Still, there's always a market for a relief pitcher with "proven closing experience" and Janssen could be on his way out if he gets too pricey for the Jays.

A potential replacement? Brandon Morrow has a $10M club option that's unlikely to be picked up but it's possible he returns on a less expensive deal. He could be an intriguing back-end of the bullpen option as he works to reestablish himself in the majors after three injury-plagued years.

September is here and the Jays aren't done yet. There's still a month left to play before any actions will be taken but from here you can already envision how the upcoming offseason will unfold

Cabrera will get offered $12+/year on the market. Rogers better step the fukc up.

Happ has a team option which should get picked up.

Let Janssen walk unless he wants to come back on a very cheap 1 year deal.

Rasmus is obviously gone.

Morrow, Santos and McGowan should all have their options declined.

Melky totally depends on what kind of offers he gets from other teams. This will be his last big deal in the Majors. He should be looking to cash in as much as possible.

...Sportsnet.ca reports that Toronto has exercised Adam Lind‘s $7.5 million club option for 2015.

Lind, 31, batted .321/.381/.479 with six home runs & 40 RBI over 96 games in 2014. He can’t hit left-handed pitching, but his salary for 2015 is reasonable & his contract still includes an affordable $8 million club option for 2016. That could make him an enticing target on the trade market.

...Sportsnet.ca reports that Toront has declined their $6 million club option on reliever Sergio Santos. He’ll receive a $750,000 buyout & become a free agent.

590 The Fan reports that Toronto will receive RH Marco Estrada from the Brewers for Adam Lind. Estrada, 31, posted a 4.36 ERA over 18 starts & 21 relief appearances in 2015.

Estrada's 29 homers allowed were the most in the National League. Rogers Centre isn’t exactly the best place to hide his warts, but he could start or pitch in a swingman role.

Toronto has extended a 1-year, $15.3 million qualifying offer to Melky Cabrera.

Cabrera has until November 10 to decide whether to accept the offer. Of course, this is all just a formality. The 30-year-old will decline & look to cash in as a free agent after batting .301/.351/.458 with 16 home runs & 73 RBI over 139 games this past season.

....by making a qualifying offer, Toronto has at least put themselves in a position to receive a compensatory draft pick if he signs elsewhere.

Toronto has exercised their $1.75 million club option on Josh Thole for 2015, declined options on Justin Smoak ($3.65 million), Brandon Morrow ($10 million), & Dustin McGowan ($4 million).

While Smoak's option was declined, he is still under team control for one more season & will now go through the arbitration process. Smoak’s expected to fill the role of Adam Lind.

Morrow will receive a $1 million buyout & become a free agent.

McGowan will receive a $500,000 buyout.

Thole owns an ugly .213/.289/.261 batting line over two seasons with Toronto, but is R.A. Dickey‘s personal catcher.

I think they are going to sign the biggest name starter that will agree to a 5 year deal, then they will trade Dickey and Thole for a quality reliever.

If they clear dickey and thole they have 118 million committed. That leaves 32 million that they can spend on a true #1 and hopefully Melky.

Jays apparently still in on Jon Lester, Andrew Miller and Pablo Sandoval. Probably just AA kicking tires as usual.

Francisco picked up by the Bosox. Glad he is their problem now.

I have a feeling that the jays are going to be spending big this off-season. It seems like AA knows he has to put up or shut up (get canned). I heard Bobcat say that they are considering offering Lester a 7 year deal (yes breaking their policy). I hope they go for it, but I am a little concerned this is going the way of JP Richardi. What ever happened to building through the farm, developing your own talent and retaining it? I think the original plan was to be like Tampa (with the ability to sign your own guys when they hit Free agency). I guess that's out the window.
