NCAA examining on-campus elite hoops camps
USA Today reports:
The NCAA is "cracking down" on Division I schools' summer basketball camps for elite players, including more unannounced "strategic" visits to camps by enforcement staff, basketball enforcement director LuAnn Humphrey said Thursday.
She said the intent was to provide full-scale enforcement of rules passed in October 2009 to shut down two problem activities:
- Camp employment of "individuals associated with recruited prospects" — people close to top players who would use that association to get paid for making sure a player attends a given camp.
- Special treatment of elite players, including access to invitation-only camps and better meals and accomodations than for other campers.
These had become what Humphrey called "gray areas" in camps operated by men's basketball coaches, so the Division I Board of Directors tried to make clear that "the logistics and structure for all campers should be similar," she said.
