He refused to practice or prepare for the first debate. He insisted on just winging it. I'm not exactly sure why. He must have heard that "over preparing makes you look fake" and made up his mind not not prepare. Kinda dumb TBH, but in all fairness it was the first 1on1 debate he ever did.

i think it's due to his habits and skills in improvising as he goes, mic or no mic. he's certainly gifted at that in a way that really grabs a lot of people. following a script is pretty much the opposite of that and something he probably associates with losers.

somewhere i was reading an acct by one of his ex-staffers about what it's like working on his team, behind closed doors. apparently he's pretty much like this all the time, which has them scrambling to figure out how to persuade him on various stuff they're not used to getting resistance from politicians on.
