Default Better Center in the 80's...Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Moses Malone?

I think we can all agree Kareem had the better overall career but who was the better Center in the 80's??

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

10x NBA All-Star 1980-1989

All NBA Defensive 2nd team 1984
All NBA First Team 1980, 1981, 1984, 1986
All NBA Second Team 1983 & 1985

Moses Malone
1982 & 1983 NBA MVP
NBA Champion 1983
9X NBA All Star 1980-1983. 1985-1989
All NBA Defensive 1st team 1983
All NBA First Team 1982, 1983, 1985
All NBA Second Team 1980, 1981, 1984, 1987

Malone was the top center of the 80s IMO. Kareem was the center of the previous decade of course, and also #2 in the 80s.

Moses was tops of the 80's and i still regard him as one of the most underrated players in history. An all time top 15 talent. 4th best center ever

I love Kareem, that cat is my hero. But Moses was the better center in the 80's. Moses single handly made the Rockets a playoff team every year. And his battles against Kareem, are legendary. If you grew up in the 80s and saw the Rockets against the Lakers, you knew that those games were awesome!!!! But I will give Moses the nod. The dude was the best.

Moses was the best center of the first half of the 80's. after 84-85 Mo fell off and Hakeem was probably the better center from 85 - 89.

really after the 84 Sixers team Moses FG PCT went below .500 for the rest of his career and it's hard to remember one single great playoff moment from Mo from that point on.

he only shot .425 for the 84-85 playoffs and never made it out of the first round again after that year.

that same year as a rookie Hakeem was arguably just as good as Mo was that year and was better every year after.

I agree with everything you said but Malone was still very productive Center from 1985-1989. He was a 20 PPG/10 RPG guy from '85-'89 even though he was in his 30's. He was still a top 3 center in the NBA.

It's pretty much a toss-up. Moses was in his peak during the early 80s, whereas Kareem was slightly passed his. But, a slightly off-peak Kareem was still in the running for best player in the game and he lasted a long, long time as a productive player.

MVP finishes from 79/80 on:
79/80: Kareem WON, Moses 9
80/81: Kareem 3, Moses 4
81/82: Moses WON, Kareem 10
82/83: Moses WON, Kareem 10
83/84: Moses 3, Kareem 4
84/85: Kareem 4, Moses 10
85/86: Kareem 5, Moses 10
After that, Kareem did not place. Moses placed 13th in 88/89

Kareem of course won 5 titles, and a Finals MVP. Moses won 1 title and Finals MVP, and also made another Finals with a 40-42 Houston team. Kareem overall was more well-rounded than Moses - better passer and shotblocker. But no one was more dominant than Moses from 78 to 83.

Jabbar is better. Without Jabbar, Lakers wouldn't have won 1985 and 1987.
