    Default rebounding vs possession defense

i'm talking about possession defense that doesn't include securing the defensive rebound, so man 2 man, help, trapping schemes, anything to make the offense shoot a bad first shot.

imo people on this board really fail to understand that rebounding is more important than possession defense because it conserves the energy of the team .... the heat is a great example, they were constructed to defend the pnr and trap the living shit out of the ball but interestingly they didn't average so many fast break poits.... room for an argument here, I wonder how this varied with minutes played and as the season went on.

The heat were exploited time and time again by rebounding teams and the pnr-D is great against primitive offenses (regular season, thunder, bulls). Real offenses (Spurs, mavs) can work such a specially tailored defense to their advantage.

Even if the rebounding differences weren't so big, largely due to insane athleticism (lebron, wade) these athletic rebounds aren't the same as the box-out rebounds because they are not consistent defensive play and they absolutely destroy defensive rotations in case of failed attempts (offensive rebounds) ... which cost the heat quite alot. Also these athletic rebounds impaired fast break opportunities.

I find this cavs- heat parallel a great example for this argument as they are kinda night and day in their personnel-decided approach.

IMO if the cavs stay in good health they'll have a better run than the heat. Their rebounding is obscene and blatt will have them play some zone to hide the weaker defenders, plus lebron/waiters/varejao are great/decent defenders and kyrie has potential (see world cup) so it won't be the open highway people are talking about..

what do you think about rebounding vs defense ?

    Fifty-fifty .

It's like rebounding vs misses shots on offence , turnovers vs force to turnovers . Of course , defensive rebounds chances would be more when you have great defence , or offensive rebounds chances would be more when you have poor offence .

But hustle plays is %50 of the game . Turnovers and boards have critical importance . Both on offence and defence . You can control the game with hustle .

But otherside , possesion defence determines your defence .

the warriors were a great per-possesion defensive team but they couldn't control the glass against cleveland and that was their undoing. we're talking 73 wins 1st defense 1st in SRS here, so they were as good as it gets in per possession defense and still had loads of problems against cleveland AND OKC. And OKC and cleveland played some primitive basketball tactically, just bully ball. So i'd say that rebounding is more relevant than per possession.

Actually , possesion defence was more critical in that series . Cavs held them %54 TS and 108.5 Ortg ( GSW had %59 TS and 114.5 Ortg in season ) while Warriors held Cavs %54 TS and 109 Ortg ( Cavs had %55 TS and 111 Ortg in season ) . Cavs did disrupt Warriors a lot of than Warriors did against them .

That's the main factor of getting the championship of Cavs .

But you're right on rebounds . Cavs had the ball more than Warriors as 3 possesions per game in the series . Let alone 3 possesions , with one possesion ; Warriors could won .
