Well if someone (MJ?) scored 20 in the last 5 minutes of one qtr and then 18 in the beginning of the next.

As long as there's practically zero data for play-by-play's before like 2002, there's no way to make a list that includes everyone.
You could argue that David Thompson or George Gervin may have done something similar in their 1978 last game scoring battle. Gervin actually had started that game cold, going 0-6 in the beginning of the quarter and still ended up with 20, followed by his historical 33 point 2nd quarter, so he may have scored those 53 points in only like 20 minutes instead of 24 - and that's assuming that he didn't get any rest in that half.
