Default Blazers hope to host all-star weekend

The Blazers announced on Thursday that the organization is also beginning a "We Got Next" campaign aimed at convincing NBA decision-makers to make Portland the host city for either the 2017 or 2018 NBA All-Star Game.

The Blazers are one of four franchises in the NBA that have yet to host an All-Star Game along with Toronto, Memphis and Charlotte. Toronto won the bid to host the 2016 All-Star Game while Charlotte is, so far, the only franchise competing against Portland for the All-Star games in 2017 and 2018.

The league needs a block of about 6,000 rooms, it has told The Oregonian, just to house its teams, media and VIPs. It prefers that they are centrally located and spread across as few hotels as possible.

That's where things get tricky for Portland. It could take 20 of Portland's largest hotels to come up with that package.

And that's before housing the traveling fans. The Portland area has some 26,000 hotel rooms in all, according to data firm Smith Travel Research, far fewer than other metros that have hosted the game.
