What if teams could sign former coaches as their 12th man?

Imagine how much better the Spurs would be if they signed Phil Jackson?

Phil would be required to dress up for warmups and shootaround as a part of the team, but his real contribution will be on the bench and inside the locker room when he coaches players alongside Greg Popavich.

It's like a team having 2 coaches.

The only drawback is you're sacrificing a valuable spot on the team.

So who would you rather have, Phil Jackson or Aron Baynes?

You honestly sound saltier than french fries. Just because you don't think it would work doesn't mean this thread should be locked. That's just your opinion, which is why you probably wouldn't make a very good coach.

Both Phil and Pop are professionals and know what it takes to win multiple rings. I would assume they'd put egos aside for the sake of the team.

If it could work for FIBA with Mike Krzyzewski and Tom Thibodeau, then it could work for the Spurs.

It's basically what OKC did when they signed Fisher. He was supposed to be a player coach who just rode the bench. Little did they know that Scott Brooks would play him 40 minutes in the biggest game of the year

isn't Thibs a defensive minded coach, and Coach K offensive? see the difference here? there isn't anything to put aside when nothing clashes.

for Pop and Phil, two very good defensive and offensive coaches...it will NOT work. stop watching Remember the Titans and thinking it applies to basketball

Why the heck would you sign a coach to be a 12th man. Those roster spots are rarer and count towards your salary cap.

Conversely, there is no limit to the number of assistant coaches you can hire, and their salaries (which Jackson would command a large salary) do NOT count towards the cap. Seems to be the most stupid way to hire a coach.

Not to mention, PJ is not going to embarrass himself by wearing uniforms just to coach.

This is the dumbest thread ever. You could just sign them as a coach. You could have two head coaches. No rule against that. No reason to use a roster spot.
