Re: What in the world is the root of all evil?
Evil is an interesting concept because it only exists within intelligent beings. A lion can never be considered evil, because it is primal. A human can be considered evil because we have the ability to analyze, consider, and question.
In that way, the root of evil is undoubtedly intelligence. Evil is always a question of motive, and only intelligent beings can have motive. Non-intelligent beings have desires, drives, and instincts, but not motive. If a bear kills a baby bear so that he can mate with his Mother, it is not evil. If a human kills a baby human for that reason, it is evil. Intent, purpose, plotting. Signals of intelligence, and necessities to define evil.
An interesting observation is that evil can never stem from our primal emotions. When we are angry and hit someone, we do not call it evil. But when we think about it, ponder it, in a state of calm, rational thought, it becomes evil. If we are sad and kill ourselves, it is not evil. If we kill ourselves with the intent to hurt our family, it becomes some shade of evil.
Interestingly, we do not attribute evil to the slaughter of primal animals. It is not usually thought of as evil to kill a bug, even if its not bothering you. But to kill a dolphin? A whale? A dog, which we attribute human traits to? You are evil. Especially if it wasnt for food, or in a dire survival situation.
