Default What year did non obvious carrying sort of become a "non violation"?

People posted these two gifs in that thread about Kobe analyzing Pippen's defense...

Kobe carries the ball no less than twice.

Kyrie carries the ball no less than twice. Even worse than Kobe's.

So, when did this become a standard?

People like to make fun of this...

Without seemingly realizing that the footage from that era was shot on different recording devices which alters our perception of the speed of play... and two... Cousy isn't carrying the ball. He's actually doing this thing called dribbling.

Here's LeBron traveling and carrying on the same play...

Here's Iverson carrying hardcore multiple times with a play that a lot of people consider to be the highlight of his career...

To be honest, I don't think there are any perimeter players in the league today that don't get away with carrying, so this isn't about calling anyone out. It's about the quality of the product.

At what point did carrying the ball become legal? I must have missed that rule change.

Steve Kerr talked about this, he says it started with Iverson.

MJ carried the ball too. It started honestly even before that. It started when players who's hands were so big that they could disguise carries effectively enough not to get called for it.

But it wasn't until the 90's that players (like Iverson) started blatantly carrying that it became OK for everyone on the perimeter to do it.

It started as a way to defend Iverson...No one could keep up or stay in front of him so the NBA had to stop him ...And called him for Traveling,Carrying,Palming,Double Dribble when he clearly did none of those things and just broke ankles.

That's why today's NBA is so sad they hardly even call BLATANT traveling..All those other violations above are never called anymore.

Let alone all the flagrant 1/ flagrant 2 fouls that back then were just hard fouls.... So someone like Iverson in today's NBA would easily avg. 60.

I dont know about day one...but they have been letting stars travel for some time.

^
1939.

Dude did a euro step out of the triple threat before dribbling....

They called it a LOT tighter in the 60s and 70s but even then it wasnt reasonable to call them all.

Now guys just do it nonstop because they know refs wont stop the play....every time.

It was Iverson.

The league decided that money > integrity as they always do.

It was part of a larger movement of "streetball and hiphop" which almost killed the league, but which consequences we still suffer from today.

based on docs ive seen theyve let traveling and palming go since the 70s... so its been around for quite some time.
