Just let everyone decide what to do. Let the guys come out of HS too if they think they can make it in the NBA that young.

Meh, college ultimately has little effect on a players NBA ability. His financial management, maturity, discipline, etc? That's a different story.

Would be hilarious if the NBA started requiring athletes to obtain a bachelors degree before entering the league, however.

The real take away from this story is...

Kareem is trying to be a head coach?

He's right. The NBA's not supposed to be a developmental league.

I miss the gamble of high school players, and how exciting it is when they do succeed.

    FIRST of all:

Colleges don't rely on individual players to make dough. People don't watch college basketball because they're interested in watching the highest level of competition or the world's most elite players. That's what watching the NBA is for. People watch college basketball because they have an affiliation with a school, they like the style of the college game, or they're just bored and have nothing else to do. In any case, they're going to continue watching whether Michael Beasley plays 0,1,2 or 5 years of college. Same with everyone from KG to Kwame to Rondo to Durant. College doesn't need star NBA prospects to make money. As long as there are people willing to play college ball - most of whom will never sniff the NBA and are playing for fun - the college game will make money.

Secondly, you think the NBA is the only business in America that has college completion and/or experience requirements? Jesus.

Seriously, who are these people that don't understand the simple concept of a business being allowed to hire whom it sees fit???

With this topic, I feel that if you are good enough, why not? Look around at other sports, well, non-North American sports. "Kids" under 18 are earning more than the majority of the global populous.

You cannot compare being a professional athlete, to being a professional in your chosen academic subject. Your body is on the clock, heavily, for one of these variations. What is the average age of retirement of professional athletes to professionals in the workplace? Maybe a 15 year gap, at the very least? In a lot of sports you have about 15 years to make what you can and then have to figure out what you will do next.

So, as I mentioned, if you are good enough, why not? What does Kareem think about the stacked Kentucky team? Does he not feel like it may be hindering development? There is no substitute to playing good minutes and gaining experience to progress in your career.

    TL;DR:

A sports professional is a TIMED profession, earn as much as you can. Good enough to get a contract, good enough to be paid.

They will never make it more than one mandatory year...it makes the league way too susceptible to having players poached by Europe.

It will never happen, but there was talk of the Big Ten looking into freshman ineligibility again a few days ago.

    Let me find the article...

    http://espn.go.com/college-sports/st...ility-freshmen

And I know Swofford (ACC commissioner) is for it.

First of all, it won't happen. And obviously it wouldn't happen conference by conference because that would be complete and utter recruiting suicide for all sports in that conference. Interesting tho.

There's still more money for most basketball players to play in the NBA, so if guys wanna sign a 3-4 year contract out of high school to go play in Europe, then come on over to America, seems like a reasonable way to go.

It's not like star American players are going to stay in Europe and play their whole career over there. I don't think the NBA loses out that much if they go play over there while they're young. Although I guess they do miss out on a lot of that early-career marketing revenue. So from that standpoint perhaps it would deter them.
