Default Team Rebounds

WHAT IS A "TEAM REBOUND"? I say it's when a shot or deflection hits the floor and the opposing team takes possession (not a steal, not a turnover from a kicked ball, for ex.) This has been bugging me FOR YEARS. Only Inside Hoops people can answer this definitively. HELP! Thanks.

A team rebound is also when the Center tips the ball and a teammate grabs it I think.

Every shot must result in a rebound, by definition. So if a shot takes a weird bounce and goes out of bounds, or gets tipped out of bounds by a player from the other team going for a rebound, then that counts towards the team rebound total. All of the individual rebounds a team gets also count.

Can't it also happen if a foul is called after a shot and it's missed, and a player grabs it just for the sake of it?

Simply means that the team rebound stat will include each player's individual rebounds for the game plus anything that is tallied as a team rebound.

I'm not sure if that's true...see http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=2007051508

Chicago's team rebounds = 9. Clearly each individual's rebounds are not included.

At least according to basketball-reference, team rebounds have been omitted from the final team stats after 1968. This was one factor (though not the only one) that total rebound numbers were inflated back then.

I asked the question originally. Nothing definitive coming out... I've checked NBA rules online, asked coaches - nothing! Yet "Team rebounds" is part of NBA game boxscores. It's a mystery to me. I'd love to hear from someone who knows a team (or league) stat-keeper.
Life's full of heavier things, but this ? makes me scratch my head sometimes.
