The Knicks and the 1996 draft.
They had 3 first round picks, 18th, 19th and 21st. Which turned out to be 3 busts....
Sr. Forward John Wallace (Syracuse)
Sr. F Walter McCarty (Kentucky)
Jr. F Dontae Jones (Mississippi St.)
At the time it looked great for them but whiffing on those 3 picks was a definite set back for years to come.
Their next 1st round pick was in 1999 which was the big white stiff from France that Vince Carter dunked over. Could have had Artest who went to the Bulls with the next pick.

Ben Wallace went undrafted that year.
Could have had Big Z and Derek Fisher too. Let's say if they got those 2 and picked Wallace, then thay would have definitely changed the course of their franchise.

Sorry, but Derek Fisher was garbage.
I bet you think he deserves to be in the hall of fame.

But how often are you going to score drafting that late? It didnt help them no doubt but at the same time to say it set them back? A bit of an exaggeration because if you were dependent on those picks to carry your franchise further in the future? You are a tad bit delusional. That range is usually bench players or we got lucky and got a starter.

If you draft 3 forwards (2 who are seniors) with the 18th 19th and 21st pick, one of those should pan out to be a 14-7 guy with 26mpg.
Never implied that those 3 would "carry" the Knicks, but at least be good compliments in the future.

With the 3rd pick of the 1984 draft, the Chicago Bulls draft ...
Not quite.

2 of them got into "He got game"...

Knicks all da way
Re: The Knicks and the 1996 draft.
I remember being super excited about John Wallace because he lead Syracuse to the Championship game.
The guy was one of the worst defensive players ever and his offense was not any good. They were all late picks, and having them all so close together was pointless. I do agree with OP that at least 1 of them should have panned out but unfortunately I don't remember any of their picks in the 90s ever doing anything outside of Charlie Ward. I guess Hubert Davis hit those winning FTs after Pippen fouled him.

Derek Fisher, Big Z were the only picks made that was worth a damn. Somehow no other franchise suffered set backs but NYK. NYK were better off packaging all 3 picks and moving up. THEN they could have got a guy who could have panned out as a 14-7 26mpg guy.
Look at the following draft in the same range. Nothing worthwhile and from 18 until end of the draft only Bobby Jackson worth noting. How many franchises were set back due to not finding a productive compliment to the future?
It's just not a range you hit on more times than not. Sorry.

Interesting look back at the 96 offseason (featuring the Knicks a bit):
