I wrote several papers years ago about the dangers of overexposure to electronics and the internet. I am considering writing a book, to be honest...
I've had a computer in my bedroom since I was roughly 9... 1992.
I am not on the "forefront" of modern technology in the sense that Jobs/Gates/Wozniak/Allen were, but I was most definitely on the forefront of the forefront of modern technology for the mass public.
I know how to assemble, diagnose, program, network, etc...
The dangers of overexposure to electronics are undeniable. There are several books on the subject, already...
Alone Together
Glow Kids
The Shallows
They're all worth a read.
Electronic use, and really the big problem imo is cellphones, leads to changes in the way your brain consumes information. It also stimulates the pleasure center in your brain in the same way that narcotics do. The potential side effects just aren't nearly as dangerous(read: death), but in terms of quality of day to day life, the argument easily could be made that they're more damaging.
Those in the field of mental health such as therapists are about to be in HUGE demand as sweeping depression and anxiety disorders become prevalent over the next 10 years.
tldr: Electronics are changing our brains and our society without us knowing it. The question is... is the juice worth the squeeze? We won't know for another 5-10 years imo. Smartphones being used by the mainstream just launched within the past 7 years. The individual and social ramifications are largely unknown.
