Default Julius Erving Larry Bird H2H game by game stats

as promised before, I'll post Dr.J and Bird H2H game stats, finally I managed some time to dig out my old excel file and paste here, hope this is worth of time reading..

before 1985 in the year which Erving passed his prime and the role change in the team, Dr.J routinly outscored Bird during regular season and playoffs (although they didn't guard each other very often), the Doctor-Birdman rivalry comes before the Magic-Bird rivalry, Dr.J and Bird had to battle each other at least 6 times in one season, plus the matchups in the playoffs, I count there're total of 61 H2H stats including regular season and playoffs, I've excluded the four games which Dr.J and Bird were sideline due to injury
, actually the "local" rivalry in the early till mid 80's actually saved the league, it renew the 76ers-Celtics rivalry Wilt Chamberlain-Bill Russell since the 60's

The rivalry is back, and it couldn't have come at a better time. In the mid-1960s, when the NBA was struggling to gain acceptance as a major league, the rivalry between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers was one of the its prime attractions. Wilt Chamberlain finger-rolling for two points for the 76ers, Bill Russell blocking a shot and starting a fast break for the Celtics - Those visions linger in the mind's eye of anyone who spent a lot of time watching those basketball giants battle it out in Philadelphia, or on the marvelous parguet floor of Boston Garden. Now, just when pro basketball needs a shot in the arm, the rivalry is back. The 76ers and Celtics are the best teams in basketball and they feature two of the game's most exciting players, Julius Erving and Larry Bird, the Doctor and the Birdman. Their games are events, just as they were in the days of Chamberlain and Russell, renewing one of sport's great rivalries.

    Tue, Apr 21, 1981 Philadelphia 76ers* @ Boston Celtics W 105 104

    Erving: 25pts, 9rbs Bird: 33pts
Reserve guard rookie "Boston Strangler" Andrew Toney scored 11 of his 26pts in the 4th quarter including two free throws with 2 seconds left to lead Phila with a one point victory over Celtics. Maxwell helped to tie the game at 101 with 51 seconds left from a 10pts fourth quarter deficit and Bird did sink two free throws to a 104-103 lead with 4 seconds left, and then Tony took over the game.
    ------------

    Wed, Apr 22, 1981 Philadelphia 76ers* @ Boston Celtics L 99 118

    Erving: 12pts Bird: 34pts
Erving was limited to 12pts by Cedric Maxwell and Kevin McHale, this is not the first time that Maxwell did a great job on defensing Dr. J, but was held to a 12pts game is embarassing. In the mean time Bird scored 34pts to help Celtics even the series.
    ------------

    Fri, Apr 24, 1981 Philadelphia 76ers* Boston Celtics W 110 100

    Erving: 22pts Bird: 22pts
Caldwell Jones guarded Bird for most of the first two games, and Bird scored 33pts and 34pts in each, therefore, Cunningham had it enough and gave the job of caging the "Bird" to Erving. Although Bird led the Celtics with 22pts and 13rbs, he was never able to dominate the foor as he had in the previous games. Bird had a slow start with 3pts in the first quarter and was held to 6pts in the fourth quarter. "But we didn't expect them to put erving on Bird."

    Erving: 20pts Bird: 18pts

    -----------

    Fri, May 1, 1981 Philadelphia 76ers* Boston Celtics L 98 100

    Erving: 16pts(5-17) Bird: 25pts, 16rbs
Toney made it to 98-97 and stole the ball from Bird with 30 seconds left but then was blocked by McHale and then Maxwell was fouled with two seconds left and made both free throws at 100-97, Phila set offense for Erving, but he fouled by Archibald before he could get a shot off, the strategy was he made the first free throw and miss the second for a rebound, and not only did the Dr. J shot miserably 5 out of 17 field goat attempts, but he chocked the first free throw so he had to make the second and Phila lost the game.
    ----------

    Sun, May 3, 1981 Philadelphia 76ers* @ Boston Celtics L 90 91

    Erving: 23pts Bird: 23pts
Boston successfully came back from a 3-1 deficit, Celtics are 25-0 this season in games in which their opponents have scored fewer than 100pts and they played a "Hall of Fame defense" in the last 5:48, holding Phila to only one point while rallying for the victory. Bird and Erving each had a game high with 23pts, Erving scored 10pts to lead Phila to a 14-3 run in the 4th quarter until the last 6min, Maxwell did a great job guarding Dr. J
    ------------

in the second season of H2H, Dr.J continued to outscored Bird in regular but looked bad in the playoffs

    Regular
    Dr.J: 29,2pts

    Sat, Dec 19, 1981 Philadelphia 76ers* Boston Celtics W OT 123 118

    Erving: 36pts Bird: 28pts
Erving scored a game high with 36pts (5pts in OT), including the free throw tied the game into OT (had he not chocked on the free-throw line again, just like he did in game 6 of last season's playoffs, Phila could've won the game in regular). With about three seconds left, Bird, who after coming off the bench had missed two excellent chances to give his team leads, decided not to take a jumper from about 18 feet away, choosing to hit an unguarded Henderson along the left baseline. Gerry immediately threw it up, but Erving blocked Henderson's last-second shot from the corner to force the game into OT at 112, Erving scored on a three-point play early in overtime to give the 76ers a 117- 114 lead. Henderson's basket narrowed the lead to one point, but Lionel Hollins and Andrew Toney sank jumpers to ensure the victory. Toney finished with 30 points, two more than Bird.

    ----------

    Sat, May 15, 1982 Philadelphia 76ers* Boston Celtics W 99 97

    Erving: 19pts Bird: 15pts, 13rbs, 11ast
Erving scored a game high with 19pts, Maxwell led Boston with 18pts and Bird had a triple-double, he scored on a jumper from the top of the key with 43 seconds remaining to bring Boston within 99-97, however, Bird threw up a 22-footer with eight seconds left that missed the mark and Cedric Maxwell came up with the offensive rebound but saw his shot hook shot rim out. Maxwell got another rebound but Julius Erving blocked the shot back into Maxwell's hands. Then, as Maxwell dropped the ball down to his waist to fire up another potential game-tying shot, he was stripped of the ball by Cheeks as the buzzer sounded.

    Boston Celtics 63-19 Finals
    Regular season (3-3)

Bird talked abt Erving's role change after G2 ECF 1985, Larry Bird: "I think everybody senses that his(Erving's) role is different, you can tell that there are 15-footers he would take in the past that he's not taking anymore. They don't look for him to score as many points as they did two or three years ago. He's been playing better defense than he ever has, I think that he's concentrating on that more. He can score if he wants but because he is aged now it's not how much he scores, it's when." The 35-year-old Erving said Bird's comments were "a pretty good analysis of what I've been doing. We're very conscious of shot selection because on this team we want guys shooting the way they're most effective."

    Erving: 17pts Bird: 38pts, 9rbs
speaking of mismatches, it should now be abundantly clear to Cunningham that Erving can no longer guard Bird. Boston's MVP has torched the Sixers (mostly Erving) for 114 points in three games (38 point average), and he made Erving look very old again Sunday.
    ---------

    Wed, Jan 30, 1985 Philadelphia 76ers* Boston Celtics W 122 104
    Erving: 15pts(4-13) Bird: 16pts(8-15)
Moses had 38pts and 24rbs to lead Philly a win, Bird, who had 80pts in two previous games including two game-winning buzzer beaters, only collected 16pts in this game
    -------

    Fri, Mar 29, 1985 Philadelphia 76ers* @ Boston Celtics L 108 112
Erving sideline due to ankle injury Bird: 24pts Bird scored 13 of his game high 24pts in the 4th quarter to lead Celtics to beat 76ers, which led by Moses who became the 16th player to grab 10000 rebounds in NBA history
    --------

    Tue, Apr 9, 1985 Philadelphia 76ers* Boston Celtics W 113 104
Erving: 18pts(8-15) Bird: 18pts(7-15) Erving and Jones also kept Bird in check defensively. After scoring 38 points on Sunday, Bird managed only 18 last night on 7-of-15 shooting. Only two of his seven field goals came from the perimeter. The rest were layups.

    Playoffs ECF (1-4)
    Sun, May 12, 1985 Philadelphia 76ers* @ Boston Celtics L 93 108

    Erving: 12pts(5-18) Bird: 23pts
Boston's frontline threesome;-) combined 77pts whilst Philly's front line foursome Moses, Erving, Jones and tub sub Barkley all combined for only 43pts; Cunningham made a switch assigned Moses to guard McHale and Barkley to guard Parish, the missmatch hurts Phila severly, in the first half Mchale was guarded primarily by Barkley/Jones, he scored 22 of his career playoff high 28pts, Cunningham switched Barkley to guard Parish in the second half, and clearly Barkley couldn't handle Parish and the latter dropped 16 of his 26pts.
    ----------

    Tue, May 14, 1985 Philadelphia 76ers* @ Boston Celtics L 98 106
    Erving: 22pts Bird: 24pts
The "Boston Strangler" was held to a 3-17 shooting, Bird was 4 of 17 from the field for the first three quarter, but his team mates bailed him out before he found his shooting touch, McHale's 16pts in the first half kept Celtics close and DJ/Paris led a 32-18 3rd quarter surge to keep Celtics in control, and then Bird finaly came back from vacation in the 4th quarter and scored 13 of his 24pts
    ------
    Sat, May 18, 1985 Philadelphia 76ers* Boston Celtics L 94 105
    Erving: 6pts(1-10) Bird: 28pts(11-19)
Erving played only 29min and he was angry at Cunningham for benching him so often, even sub Barkley played 13 more minutes than he did.
    --------
    Sun, May 19, 1985 Philadelphia 76ers* Boston Celtics W 115 104 Erving: 15pts(4-21) Bird: 14pts(4-15)
    Wed, May 22, 1985 Philadelphia 76ers* @ Boston Celtics L 100 102
    Erving: 16pts(6-12) Bird: 17pts(6-18)
Bird missed 12 of 18 FGA including the 11 seconds remaing driving layup due to his right elbow and index finger injury, but he slapped Toney's ball in the final seconds to secure the win

This is the fifth game Erving had started in the backcourt because of injuries to Andrew Toney and Sedale Threatt, plus a decision to make Julius Erving a starter in the backcourt, has become the Sixers ' third guard. He played a season-high 27 minutes against the Celtics, burying four clutch jumpers in the fourth quarter.

Great work. Your information is an excellent supplement to this article.

I was very young when this rivalry began but now understand it to be one of the most overlooked in NBA history.

at the beginning it was the two Jones guarded Bird and then Doctor had to put some efforts on the Birdman, like I said besides of his role change, Doc really began old and slow in the mid 80's, that's when I started to watch NBA, it's such pity I missed the real live broadcast of a prime Doc v.s. a young Bird... everyone only remember the famous 42-6 game and totally neglect how good Doc was when he was still in his prime
