My top 5 Layups of all time. Post your favourites or comment.
When you think of scoring, you either think of the dunk or the 3 point shot. The dunk has overtaken the layup as a "flashier" way of scoring, while the 3 point shot is getting more popular ( ala. Orlando Magic ). The layup can be considered something of an lost art, or something not as mentioned. With that said, lets look at my favourite layups of all time.
No. 1 Dr J's Behind The Backboard

In the fourth quarter of Game 4, with his Sixers trailing 2-1in the series, Julius Erving delivered perhaps the ultimate move of his highlight-filled career to help Philly to a 105-102 win. Dr. J drove baseline, elevated, reached back behind the backboard with the ball and somehow emerged on the opposite side of the basket to convert the circus shot. Magic Johnson called it "the greatest move I've ever seen in a basketball game."
No.2 Jordan Over 3 Defenders

If I were to have a favourite layup, this would be it. Jordan actually drived passed his defender, then jumped OUTSIDE the paint about 10 foot? away from the basket, HANGED on the air with 3 defenders over him, ADJUSTED his shot about 3 times in the air because of a taller defender and actually reversed and went in. Poetry in motion.
No. 3 Jordan's Switch Hand
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7vsjOHq5E0
The succinct call from Marv Albert is iconic: "Oh! A spec-tac-ular move by Michael Jordan!" The mid-air switch from right hand to left was one of 13 consecutive made field goals for Jordan (who went 15-18 for the game), as the Bulls turned a close game against the Lakers into series-tying blowout which propelled them toward their first NBA championship.
No. 4 Ray Allen's Ridiculous Reverse
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRw6-jRMvjE&feature=fvw
Game 4 of the finals and amazing concentration by Ray Allen who blew pass Kobe leaving him in dust, went up for the regular lay-in, but Gasol was there and challenged. When it looks like there really isn't anyway of the ball going in, Allen adjusted his shot for the reverse, Odom came in for the help defense, and tried to block the ball but Oopps...was a tad too slow, gravity brought him down as the ball went up, leaving Odom helplessly looking at the ball falling into the net..priceless..
No.5 Vince Carter's 360 Layups

Visanity besides his dunking prowess is well-known, albeit lesser, for another thing, that is his 360 layups. He makes the best 360 dunks, but he also does the best 360 layups, makes it so easy that you would think he actually practiced this shot. Each and everyone of his 360's are amazing to watch. Talk about evolving the game.
