Euroleague MVP for February, 2013: Ante Tomic
Most people celebrate their birthdays only on the date they were born. Ante Tomic of FC Barcelona Regal started well before he turned 26 in mid-February and kept the party going until the last day of the month. By the time he had finished, it was clear to anyone watching that Tomic has entered his prime as a big man who can anchor a great team, making him Euroleague Basketball's clear choice as bwin MVP for February. Tomic was his team's top scorer, rebounder and shot-blocker as Barcelona put together the only 4-0 record during the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16 last month. Barcelona defeated the two teams closest to it in the standings at home, and went on the road to win twice more. It did not trail on the scoreboard after halftime during any game all month and not after the first quarter in three of the four victories. Tomic was the man who was most in the middle for all four victories, giving Barcelona consistent and efficient inside dominance at both ends of the floor. He finished February having averaged 17 points, 5 rebounds and 1 block while making 28 of 41 two-point shots, or 68%. He ranked fourth in the Euroleague during the month in both scoring and performance index rating, 20.8 per game, despite playing fewer minutes than 36 other players. Most importantly, Tomic helped Barcelona take over first place in its Top 16 group and turn its attention now to clinching homecourt advantage in the playoffs. With a couple team records to boast, too, February couldn't have gone any better for Barcelona thanks to the superior play of the bwin MVP of the Month, Ante Tomic.
