Most triple doubles in the regular season?
Who holds the record for the most triple doubles in the regular season? Rondo has 3 so far and looks like he can get 7-8 at this pace. Before Rondo tore his acl he had 4 I believe and it was in February. Jason Kidd maybe? Who holds it?

Re: Most triple doubles in the regular season?
Probably magic Johnson, though unofficially wilt would be at top had they counted blocked shots.

Probably Big O in the season he averaged a triple double. Would make the most sense to me.

hard to believe kidd isn't on that list considering he has the 3rd-most TD's all-time.
btw, yea... sucks that they didn't record blocks in wilt's day. i couldn't believe it, so had to look it up.

Re: Most triple doubles in the regular season?
What frustrates me is when they talk about oscar averaging a triple double all the time when wilt probably averaged a triple double multiple times. Really is a shame.

In the modern era, Magic Johnson has the record for triple-doubles in a season with 18.
Interestingly, Jordan played a 24-game stretch at point guard at the end of the 1989 season - it was his only time at PG in his entire career - and these 24 games included a stretch of 10-triple doubles in 11 games.

"In just 16 games so far at point guard, Jordan has gone from the league’s leading scorer the last two seasons to being lumped with Johnson, John Stockton of Utah and Isiah Thomas of Detroit as the elite among NBA point guards. Jordan may already be the best of the group".
Atlanta Journal Constitution, April 9, 1989.
Jordan finished the 1989 season with 15 triple doubles - but certainly, if he would have played PG the entire season, he would have smashed Magic's record and probably at least doubled it.

Given that Harvey Pollack himself, claimed that Chamberlain had entire seasons of 10+ bpg, I don't think there is a shadow of a doubt that he is REAL all-time leader in triple-doubles (both regular season AND post-season.)

I'm one of the researchers on nbastats.net. We have a Wilt spreadsheet up there:

Take the blocks numbers with a grain of salt, if it says "estimated", then the blocks number comes from a formula one of our researchers used for calculations. There are a number of legitimate block citations though (the ones that don't say estimated next to them).
