Giving Murakami another with Kafka on the Shore.

1Q84 was ok but way too long with one of the "books" being almost completely unnecessary.

Good-ass read. Its about a female professor who invited a small circle of women students to her home to read and discuss books that the Iranian clerical regime has banned for a myriad of stupid reasons. The central theme of the book is one of post-Revolutionary Iran's most present themes: the loss of Iranian identity in the face of the rise of political Islam. Iranian writers that I've read are truly brilliant at capturing and balancing the anger at Iranian authorities with the really sad longing for a better, more Iranian time of life.

A great read about how a horrific incident in 1977 (Kermit Washington almost killing Rudy Tomjanovic) changed the lives of both players and changed the NBA. Cool insight into what the game was like back then.

Just finished Pere Goriot by Honore de Balzac. Kind of in the same vein as The Great Gatsby as far as themes except that it is a very different cultural perspective (early-mid 1800s Paris). The entire book is essentially a criticism of Parisian society and the role that money played in earning a place among the cultured elite. In the end money corrupts family, love, and morality and lessons that are learned quickly get forgotten because of the allure of Parisian society.

The best part of the book for me was how Balzac would end inconsequential events with culture criticisms/musings that tied everything together and touched on the hidden circumstances behind the basic actions and thoughts of his characters. It kind of gave the feeling that history and circumstances of a person are cooked inside a persons mind to create their personality and characteristics.
