Panama Papers reaction
Possibly the biggest corruption scandal of our time is unraveling as we speak.

[QUOTE]The company
The company at the center of all these stories is Mossack Fonseca, a Panamanian provider of offshore companies with dozens of offices all over the world. It sells its shell firms in cities such as Zurich, London, and Hong Kong

The only reason for anyone to be involved with this company is to hide money.
In the case of these state leaders and politicians, it's often going to be because their money is dirty illegal blood money, used in shady dealings with other criminals and nobody should know about it. In the case of Lionel Messi it's probably simply for tax evasion.

Is Luis Suarez on this list?

Re: Panama Papers
Not surprised any of the leaders mentioned in the OP were involved in this.
Will be interesting to see what figures from the west end up fingered in this.
Justice better come down on those involved.

I try to eli5:
1. Seemingly legitimate company "A" makes a lot of money.
2. Company "A" actually makes money because of corruption, or wants to evade taxes.
3. Person "X" has a shell company "B" which only exists on paper in a tax haven banana republic, but is actually more like an anonymous bank account. (in the case of tax evasion this person is the owner of company "A", in the case of corruption it's their secret associate)
4. Company "A" buys fake services from fake company "B" to make hidden payments to person "X".
A giant batch of information including the names of the people making use of these shell companies has been leaked. Concerning many billions of dirty money.

The Icelandic prime minister is a hugely controversial one. This is the guy who was seen by many (idiots) as the people's champion of Iceland, Iceland's Robin Hood. One of the key figures in Iceland's decision to keep their deposit guarantee for foreigners and could effectively steal their money. One of the key figures in putting 100% of the blame on the banks (and taking all responsibility away from the government and democracy).
Turns out he had a personal stake in his policies to the tune of millions of dollars.
But I'm sure there's bigger bombs that will drop.
