The GOAT Award. Given out every 20 years if there is a new player that is or has reached GOAT level. If noone reaches this level every 20 years then the previous GOAT remains.

I'd like that, and I'd have it voted on after the playoffs. More often than not, it'd go to the best player on a championship team, but not always. For example, 2004 obviously wouldn't be a Piston, and would still be KG, or '89 and '90 would clearly go to Jordan rather than Isiah. Probably Kobe in 2008 instead of KG. Not sure how some of them would go, but it'd be interesting to see if Kobe got it over Wade and Duncan in '06 and '07, respectively.

The NBA version of the Conn Smythe Trophy. Basically, the NBA Playoffs MVP.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conn_Smythe_Trophy

Unlike the playoff MVP awards presented in the other major professional sports leagues of the United States and Canada (the Super Bowl MVP, the NBA Finals MVP, and the World Series MVP), the Conn Smythe is based on the entire NHL postseason instead of just the championship game or series.
May or may not go to the winner of the Bill Russell Finals MVP.

This is pretty much what I would do. Seeing as how the MVP requirements have changed from season to season since the start of the 2000s, and journalistic narratives and voter fatigue have snubbed many MVP award winners ... the difference I would make is just vote for all awards after the ENTIRE season. Playoffs are apart of the season, and is the MOST important part of the season to boot. Awards shouldn't be voted on until after the whole season ends, or at least take the first two rounds of the playoffs into consideration and award the MVP based off first two rounds and regular season. That way we avoid embarrassments like Dirk's ridiculous 2007 MVP.

Only in rare cases such as MJ in '89 and 90 or LeBron in 2009 where someone is playing at an insanely high level, that they would edge out another superstar's slightly inferior performance to win that season's award. And obviously, like the three seasons listed their play would have to be at an all-time high.

ShaqAttack3234, given you're such a knowledgeable poster, do you feel given this criteria for MVP and the following yearly winners, playoff performances included give a better perception of these all time greats dominance league wide and is a better accurate reflection of the number of MVPs they should have on their resume?

    1989 - MJ
    1990 - MJ
    1991 - MJ
    1992 - MJ
    1993 - MJ
    1994 - Hakeem
    1995 - Hakeem
    1996 - MJ
    1997 - MJ
    1998 - MJ
    1999 - Duncan
    2000 - Shaq
    2001 - Shaq
    2002 - Shaq
    2003 - Duncan
    2004 - KG
    2005 - Duncan
    2006 - Wade
    2007 - Duncan
    2008 - Kobe
    2009 - LeBron
    2010 - Kobe
    2011 - Dirk
    2012 - LeBron

    MJ - 8x MVPs
    Duncan - 4x MVPs
    Shaq - 3x MVPs
    Hakeem - 2x MVPs
    Kobe - 2x MVPs
    LeBron - 2x MVPs
    KG - MVP
    Wade - MVP
    Dirk - MVP

Oh, and as suggested earlier I'd do an embarrassing award to help get rid of certain aspects of the game.

A flopper of the year award is a MUST.

Thanks. I didn't start watching ball until I was like 4 or 5, earliest memories being the '89 playoffs. So I didn't really want to comment on things I didn't see in context.

Pretty much a similar list as mine, only differences being 2009, and maybe a couple others. Thanks for the list, I think it's pretty accurate myself.

I see why people would give 2009 reg season to Wade, and 2009 post season to Kobe (he went one round deeper than Bron) ... but Bron with comparable numbers in the reg season to Wade, while making the Cavs a 60 win team, and a series of playoff performances that rival MJ's peak playoffs. I have to give him the award in 2009, even though Kobe went one round deeper (and mind you didn't play as well v.s. Orlando as Bron did)

Bron could've had 2010 too if he didn't quit like a little hoe, and mentally check out for greener pastures down in Miami. He murked in that Bulls series, way better than how Kobe played v.s. OKC. And then had the Cavs up 2 games to 1 v.s. Boston, and had that ridiculous game 3 in Boston where he scored 21 1st quarter points. Then proceeded to stop trying.

The Oscar Robertson award. It would be awarded to the most versitle player in the league. The best scorers normally get the MVP. They have a DPOY award, which is for the best defender.

That isn't true at all. In example, LeBron has 3 MVPs and counting.

Can't disagree with much there. Considering it is a Player of the Year award, I wouldn't really see the case for Wade (while most would say he played better than Bryant) after his Hawks series and since POY is basically regular season + playoffs.

I would actually call it a draw for 09 between James and Bryant IMO, but I would lean to giving it to James for the above reasons you brought up.
