Default Do you need intelligence to be a GREAT basketball player?

Or can you make it just off instinct and "bball iq"? We all know from Stephon Marbury that you dont need to be smart to be good, but to be GREAT, without the purely physical tools to dominate just based off that (Shaq, Wilt), how much intelligence is required to excel above, if any?

I asked this question while the board was malfunctioning and got a couple responses with people disagreeing before the delete, so lets try again.

It really depends on what position you play and what you're able to do and not do.

Coaches would admire a C who devotes all his time and game to rebounding and playing defense the same way they would love an intelligent point guard that makes **** happen offensively.

You just need to maximize your talents.

Of course you need to be intelligent to be great. As if the answer was no you don't need to be. Christ...

Intelligence isn't just running a tough offense correctly.

Rodman was intelligent because when he rebounded he would look and see what side of the rim the ball was going to bounce off of and he would react to what he saw which is why he averaged so many rebounds.

Intelligence isn't limited to one thing. If that was the case the only great players would be PG's.

the only all-time great who i've never really heard praised for his basketball intelligence was moses malone, and barkley claims to have learned a lot from him. i don't think you can be a great basketball player without having a thorough understanding of the total game. technically, hypothetically it may be possible though.

And honestly can one call Shaq an intelligent player?

He's a decent passer sure but he makes the game very simply and thats why he's so great. His dominance!

shaq actually is pretty intellectual about the game. i've read some interesting interviews with him where he discusses the way his game changed as he grew up. he talks about how he started as a mid range jump shooters and found himself more effective as a low post passer until his coaches got on him about being the main scoring threat on the box. he talked about changing his game to fit the talent around him (being more of a passer or more of a scorer) and the effect the zone had on him in college. he also talked about his mindset when it came to dominating opponents - who physicallity could frighten and who needed to be outmanuevered and just beat up. he's a big goofball, but he does seem to have a pretty deep understanding of the game.

Oh man... thank God we didn't have to see 7"1 300lbs Shaq shooting jumpers.

IMO absolutely yes.
you won't find any true greats that didn't have understanding of the game. that doesn't even have to mean analyzing skills and general knowledge (way too many great players make lousy executives and broadcasters), but no one becomes great without understanding of at least his position in the game.

I want to see him camp at the three point line like Sabonis, pegging 'em at a 33% clip, milking out a bad contract into his mid 40s.

well, that depends on you definition of intelligence. even shaq with his physical gifts wouldn't make it without some basketball IQ - positioning, footwork, court awareness, his great passing out of double teams.

he may not be smart in real life, he may think that parthenon is a club in athens, but he's surely got the understanding of playing the center position. and that's only thing that matters.
