He's probably referring to the fact that MLK was a staunch Republican"supporter" at first. Remember the first 2 civil rights acts were brought forth by Republicans but the Dems shot it down. Even in 1964, the Civil Rights Act had more Dems voting against it than Republicans. MLK had a civil rights agenda so he was hitching his wagon to whoever was pushing it hardest at the time.
